Today's Episode of "Damaged in Shipping"
« on: September 26, 2019, 03:06:40 pm »
Seen this pop up on a cheap BIN for the kids, unfortunately it did not survive the trip... I cannot tell if this is poor packaging, metal fatigue, or a mix of both?? The ebay pictures do not show the side of the wheel. I will say it was not packed the best... the Mamod box was laid directly in the bottom of the shipping box with air pockets on the top and sides. The damaged wheel was on the bottom side.

Looks like corrosion in the metal from the pictures. Probably why it had a cheap BIN.

That's what I am thinking looking at the outer rim and may have had the start of cracking in the middle, but looks to have taken a blow in shipping that finished it off. The other wheel shows no signs of fatigue... It was a cheap BIN (but now only worth about that BIN) as the seller did not know what it was and it was left over from an estate sale. Looked on eBay for a spare wheel and the going rate is about $20 (plus $20 shipping from the UK), which is the same as the $40 I paid for the entire thing...

If it was shipping and poor packing i would expect the outer rim to be broken and not the inside rim .
The whole wheel looks knackered and would not have survived no matter what packing was used

That's what I think, the inner rim took a blow, what would you ask from the seller? Roller was $40 with $15 shipping. He had me send pictures as he thinks it was insured, but insurance doesn't cover poor packaging...

Your last photo shows a crack right around the rim .
That is not poor packing or shipping damage
That is Mazac disintegrating  ie zinc pest /zinc rot / mazac rot .
A common enough problem with some engine brands
ie David Auld flywheels. And Fleischmann bearing blocks and flywheels .
Not all mazac is created equal .
There would have been signs on the wheels before he  packed it
Have a close look at your contents ?
Are all the bits there ? ( jigsaw puzzle time )

Yes, I am familiar with it in some David Aulds, Fleischmann, Mastrand, AHI, etc. but have never seen it on a Mamod wheel yet. Will there be more in the future?...

Here is the only ebay picture the seller had of the engine. Should I be given a partial refund? I would not have paid the $40 had I seen the wheel, instead I would have passed...

I do remember in the distant past some one saying a mamod front roller had just disintegrated when it received a knock

First I have heard, but that makes two Mamods, so we will likely see more in the future...

So my next question, do you or others feel that Mazak rot and zinc pest are contagious? and will spread to other items in the collection? I have my opinion, but will save it for now...

Contagious ??? It is not the bloody  measles .
It is a ( in my opinion) a chemical reaction between the ingredients in the mazac.
Not all mazac is created equal.
Mazac has not been refered to “muck metal “ for no reason
There is various mixes for Mazac and I am sure floor sweeping would sometimes get throwen in .

Zinc pest is about as contagious as brass dezinc which as you would know is zinc getting leached out of the brass to leave a copper sponge .
Nothing to do with who it sits next door to on the plane or in the display cabinet

Haha, I enjoyed reading that Dennis, I also do not think it is contagious, but I know there are a few who believe it will spread. I think that belief comes from collectors who noticed it happening to one piece, then another and so on... BUT had those pieces been in different locations it would have just as likely occurred. I also forgot to add Märklin to the list, I have a few dynamos with outer shells/cases that look like they'll explode into a million pieces if you even breathe on them wrong.

I guess I'd just chalk it up to bad luck and not asking for more pictures before purchasing it, and leave it at that.

Just my $CAD.02 worth.🤔

But then someone else would have found the cheap BIN  ;) :D

It really is a pretty nice roller if I could find a spare drive wheel on US ebay.
