Nice to see this great piece in action--first video I've seen of the clutch mechanism. Don't know for sure but would guess that's how some of the real ones worked in those days.

The few I’ve seen have a wooden handle/lever hanging down like this at 1:10 with the idler pulley

Well slap me sideways, was only yesterday unpacking more stuff and looked at this shaft with sadness thinking much of the mechanism was missing; now with the aid of Scott’s post here I see that I’m not missing much at all, just the cross bar, handle and counterweight, maybe a pulled or two as well. I’m thinking that all the main bits are there, it has just been assembled incorrectly, need to dismantle and start again.

Glad to see that you got that one Scott. I have a few of those in addition to the same size traditional ones with no lever. Bases are exactly the same and interchangeable; but the ones with no lever sells way cheaper. You may be able to get one without the lever & use its painted base.
