He and his wife visited 'back home' fairly often and did occasionally get engines from Germany. He collected the good old fashioned way--toy shows, auctions, networking among collectors, dealers, etc. He wrote several articles for that magazine, usually about an engine in his collection. He was a very talented photographer and artist as well.

Thanks again Brent, I do have some steam magazines from the '90's so have taken a glimpse of the pre-ebay collecting, but it was nowhere near as convenient as eBay and kind of had to see what you were actually buying from just text or a small picture. I googled his name and did find his other articles from the same magazine.

A great story Nick. Glad you got the magazine.

I saw it in person at NAMES this year. It really is a beauty. I told Gil that if Nick changed his mind that I definitely wanted it. I don’t think it has ever been fired.

Gil was very generous on the price.

Yes, Gil was very fair to me with the price, I am thankful for that  :)

I do think it has been fired, but not often or any time recently... There is white reside on the SV threads and the gasket has separated into 4 pieces

I have some new fiber washers coming tomorrow and I plan to give it one steaming for a video... stay tuned  ;)

The boiler is also unique on this one, and unlike my other Märklin verticals, being there is no center flue or endcap... it appears to be pressed from a single sheet

Soot from between the boiler and firebox

Beautiful engine and a great story. If I had the engine, I too would have had to have the magazine.

Well done Nick!
