MSM Tyne Oscillating Engine
« on: July 26, 2019, 10:17:07 am »
Been wanting to get an MSM engine for some time and i decided to test the water with buying one of their entry level models. It took ten days to get here which isn't bad going from down under, and i have to say i'm really impressed by the quality of the castings and material. Since this was a self assembly kit, i was expecting to do more work but the bulk of the engine comes ready assembled. I'm waiting for a wood base to mount it on before i give it a proper running in on steam, so watch this space for a video!

I have to say for the price and even with the additional customs charges, this engine is still far cheaper than another similar engine from an established maker here in the UK!  :o :o

Here are a few photos below:

The well packed kit as it came:

Shades of a Stuart ST ... but yes, MSM offers top quality for reasonable prices. The one engine of theirs that I have, a Pevensey, is truly a cracker and was quite a bargain as well I think.

MSM rather reminds me of the Australian version of PM Research for cost / quality comparison.

This looks like a quality kit.  I think it would be great for a steam boat.

I never knew you had one Daniel!  :o The Pevensey is the next engine on my list to get.  ;)

I agree with comparing PMR with MSM, both companies offer very reasonable engines without sacrificing on quality.

It is very nicely made Charlie, most of MSM's range is geared for the marine market. However my engine will be staying on dry land.  ;)

Fantastic Philip, the MSM range is terrific and priced well. The packaging is terrific and its great to not have the worry of cast iron castings rusting.

You're on a slippery slope now and I'm sure you'll be adding more MSM engines to your steam stable :)

Thanks Jim, yes i know that as i've just ordered a reversing Pevensey engine to keep the Tyne company!!!  :o

I think the fact they use Gunmetal for the castings is a huge plus over Stuart's iron based offerings, especially for those that like running on live steam.

Philip, that looks to be a very solid, well made engine...I too like the idea of brass/bronze vs. iron castings for the rust avoidance along.  I must also say your photos are really well done, crisp and nicely posed...even the grass one!

Doug i also have an ST engine and i like both as my ST is very nicely made, but i think the castings are a lot finer on the MSM engine. However i think if you were buying new then the Tyne is a no-brainer due to the price and it even comes with a lubricator, something you'd have to buy extra with the ST engine.  ::)

Bronze is certainly preferable to cast iron, i'm very happy with the engine Rog and i'm looking forward to running it on steam. I've heard they do take a bit of running in and run quite wet initially so we will see. Glad you like the photos, i wanted good closeups so you could see the quality of the castings and machining.

Funny thing, after seeing your MSM engine, and looking on their website at all they have to offer, i saw this Plant on ebay. It seems like a good deal, since a new one costs $1100 plus shipping to the US for me!

Looks to be a nice set-up and about half price to boot!
