Oiling the cylinder on the miniature Hit & Miss engines
« on: November 07, 2022, 04:57:14 pm »
Just wondering if it's necessary to oil the cylinder on the Chinese miniature Hit & Miss engines or does the oil in the petrol mix suffice?

As mentioned, the fuel for my engines is low-octane gasoline mixed with Marvel Mystery Oil.  On the intake stroke the fuel vapor wets the protruding intake valve, cylinder walls and combustion chamber.  During combustion the oil is not completely burned so the protruding exhaust valve gets coated when the exhaust is blown out the exhaust port.  The level of lubrication may vary with different oils but it would be a good bet that the cylinder is getting enough lube to keep the ring happy.

There is some ring blow-by on my engines that accumulates at the base of the cylinder after several runs.  That combined with a squirt of oil on the rod's upper end before a run session guarantees that the lower end of the cylinder gets lubed.
