M90 hit n miss compressed air conversion?
« on: March 28, 2021, 09:14:49 pm »
I ran across this video of a hit and miss engine that runs on compressed air.
It does "miss" and sounds pretty good!
There are free plans to build it, but the very first thing I thought was how it looked like an air cooled version of M90.
I have so many projects going, the thought of machining an entire engine again is a bit off putting(right now) BUT the magic is a clever valve in the head. Got me thinking it would be Big fun to just make an "air-head" for an M90! I have not looked into the details but wouldn't it be nice to just bolt a self made head on your M90 and run indoors on compressed air? And be able to covert back to Zippo fuel head in minutes?
Just thought I would throw the idea out there in case someone wants to give it a go
( before me)

Sounds more like a "hit,hit,hit,hit...miss" air powered steam engine ! .....I'm used to the gas & spark h & m sounds indoors.....but air fired might be someone's thing....Thx for sharing, .....tom

Here is a video of this engine after I got it sorted out.
It was one of my most fun builds.
It will run all day at the shows without needing any attention - unlike the IC Hit and miss engines!
I do like the idea of interchangeable heads for the M90.

It sounds cool, and pairs nicely with that marble run...I got to get one of those pretty soon. Thanks for sharing the video!

Cool set up, this came up in my feed after watching this vid, like the idea of a quick change head.

Sure is a cool engine Scott, well done!

Just subscribed and went through your YouTube channel, and wonder how the hit&miss is controlled on the two-stroke Jan Ridders there?
Cheers

The hit and miss mechanism on the Jan Ridders engine uses a weight and a spring to pull the hall effect trigger magnet away from the sensor as the RPM's rise.
I got the idea from working on Fiat automobiles in the 70's - they had this type of arrangement on the distributor rotor as an RPM limiter.
I had trouble with the engine running away as the fuel level dropped - so this was my solution.

I have seen Scott's Hit & Miss steam or air engine up close at Rough & Tumble. It is a really neat piece.
