M90 Weak Battery Reminder !
« on: February 17, 2020, 02:21:53 am »
EVerything looks & sounds normal but your M90 gradually starts running problems or chasing the needle valve setting ?? ..Check /Replace those batteries !! ..Despite good normal brite "On" led indicator & seeing & hearing good spark on h and cranking,  Weak <2.9 battery voltage sneaked up & really "worked" me over trying everything (almost pulling cyl head off) to get my M90 running normal again !

Happened to me. On my 2nd set of batteries now. I remember desperately turning the
flywheel and scratching my head in wonder. Then I had a sudden burst of insight. Dead batteries! I then made an
night excursion to my local Walgreens to get some and ,of course, that was the problem.

Many people are running these on only two batteries to save the electronics. If running on only two batteries they only have slightly over 3 volts to start with.

I run both the vertical and horizontal engine on only two batteries, I have never put three AA batteries in them.

Both run good with no problems with the Hall's effect transistor.

I am thinking of putting a single Rechargeable Li-ion 18650 battery, holder and charging plug in them instead of the AA batteries.

Hi Chuck...i'm with you...i really like the 3.7 volt 18650 rechargeable li-ion battery idea ! ...Fresh off the charger at 4.2 volts should really pep up the sparkplug juice !! ...btw...that little black, 2 wire timing sensor near the magnet timing disk is a simple magnetic reed switch...not like the earlier blue engine's electronic 3 color wire hall device...the 2 plain black color wire leads is the tipoff...still the M90 newbie,...tom.

Tom, thanks for the information. When I got my first engine I assumed that it was a Halls effect based on what I had read from others. When a Halls fails it is normally from overvoltage/current so I reduced the number of batteries to 2. I never really tore my engine apart to check it. When it runs I don't mess with it.  8)

This a great point guys. I have always changed the batteries out as soon as I suspect even the slightest weakness.
I also always use 3.
I would like to see a spark saver added to these.
We would get 10x the battery life or more.

i know the feeling Chuck ! ...at times in total confusion, i've been hesitant to even touch the needle valve setting in fear of losing the "magical"  sweet point !! ...with so much crossover posts between the original blue & later M90 & up models, i also assumed all versions used a Hall sensor..i would be totally lost without Gil & this forum !...Gil, i'm playing around with a battery saver mod like you mentioned but i'm not totally happy so far but we're getting there ! ..i'm cursed with trying to improve things without breaking it..tom.

I have had no problems with mine.

Possibly a short in the system.

Maybe a fuse to protect against any power surge?

Hi there appreciate the reply, but I have changed the entire Ignition system 3 times Ignition module-hall sensor-battery tray-new plug-new switch, which all comes with a ignition set up for these engines, I  thought they had a bad run of the ignitions for the 90-and 91 ,also connected everthing really carefull ground included, I fly rc airplanes -quadcopters-and helicopters and have had a few real john deere 1 1/2 hp hit and miss through the years, the motor is got me thinking about a Recel ignition like I run on my gas airplanes.

Hi Ike, i kno electronic postmortems can be a dizzy pia,.. but have you done a 100 % complete module
 Stand-alone, chassis isolated, sparkplug &
timing sensor Disconnected, ignition  module Only powered up functionality Spark test ??...there's still a recovery posibility !...or how much $ you want for the dead modules ?...tom.

Hi.
I had a problem with an electronic ignition on Redwing engine.
I forgot to connect the electrical wire for the return
So, the return of the high voltage passed through the sensor hall, I saw the spark, and everything was dead.
it pays attention to the electrical circuit.
