Its interesting that there's a lot world wide metaphors used that references steam engines and firearms....and the users of the references really don't have any knowledge of their original usage.

Shot in the dark
Joke misfired
Stick to ya' guns
Under the gun
Pulled the trigger
Flash in the pan
 etc etc etc
