What is best way to put water in M91 radiator
« on: August 25, 2019, 11:09:24 am »
This seems like a dumb question, but when I remove the knurled plug on top of radiator and try to put water in using a large syringe...it comes right back out...I can only get a few drops in.

Any tips from folks who have actually used the radiator???  I do find engine runs fairly hot compared to M90, so I want to use radiator if I can figure out how to fill it.

Sorry I am of no help, yet... but thanks for asking the question as I had not yet opened mine and was wondering the same. My obvious answer was going to be a syringe, but looks like that didn't work for you... Have you tried a syringe with a long needle to get further down in there?

Yes Nick, tried a 3 inch long metal syringe tip as well as a 2 inch flexible one...same result, water bubbled right back out of the hole.  I even tried loosening several of the other fittings associated with the bends in the radiator...no joy.

While talking about fittings...there is another knurled on on the side of the crankcase opposite the radiator...on removal you can see the crank and components normally accessible on the M90. I squirted a little 30 weight oil in there as best I could, though I expect the residual oil from the piston/cylinder above will drip on the crank and other bits.

Another learning...each knurled plug on the M91 has a center vent hole...convenient to fill fuel tank without actually removing that plug...I just use syringe with needle end.

Bonjour,
I have bought a small 5 cl syringe with its needle at my pharmacy. Putting the needle which is about 6 cm long and 0,8 mm wide at the bottom of the central tube, a drop, a launch, another drop and so on until the water does not disappear and escapes from the radiator. I took me long minutes to fill it correctly I hope.

Hi, use a syringe to join from the hole above the radiator. When it is full, turn the engine flywheel by hand to make the pump work continuously. At the same time, it will continue to inject water. The pump will pump water into the cylinder. Loosen the drain screw on the cylinder. When the pumped water reaches the highest position, the water will leak out of the screw. At this time, tighten the screw to stop adding water.

Thank you Jin, I will give that a try tomorrow.

Raphael, thanks for your inputs...I will try and be more patient while filling...might be I was just forcing too much water in the radiator and it could not take it that fast.

cheers,

I the engine is secured with straps or clamps you can add water while it is running.

Still no joy trying to get water into the M91 radiator setup.  I use a long needle on a syringe, but whether put into the hole in the knurled plug OR remove plug and push needle down into the radiator, it just bubbles back out.  I have tried filling when engine is cold and tried filling when it is running....no progress either way.  I do notice the cylinder getting hot and the radiator slightly warm, but I'd prefer the opposite.

Has anyone really managed to fill this radiator ???

I haven't been able to fill mine from the radiator.  I'm going to try removing the bolt holding the cooling line at the top of the cylinder and adding water there at the high point of the system.  Seems like that is the best approach.  I'm wondering about the vented radiator cap.....may have to seal that at some point with a bit of epoxy.

I removed the bolt attaching water return line to the top of the cylinder last night.  That gave me access to add water directly to the cylinder jacket and down the return line.  To my surprise, the cylinder was already full of water, and when I started to add water to to the return line, it just overflowed the radiator.  I believe my engine was already full.  When I started the engine and let it run, the first part that began to warm was the return line from the top of the cylinder to the radiator, and then the top of the radiator.  This area of the cooling system warmed before the cylinder head or any other part of the engine.  My cooling system seems to be running as I would expect.

I also removed the cap on the crankcase vent when I ran the engine to allow the crankcase a less restricted vent.

Mike, I think I have reached the same conclusion as you...the radiator was already full upon receipt.  This might be the reason why it won't take more water!!!  Sure glad to have received mine in August and not January...had it been shipped full of water in January a ruined engine and radiator is virtually guaranteed.

The more I run the M91 the more I like it...

Far better that the radiator is "twice" full, than it should ever be empty I would think. Yet it seems kind of odd that it would ship with water in it as jet cargo bays may not always be heated adequately for long hours at 35,000 ft.
