Dunbar engine, damaged during shipment
« on: May 11, 2024, 06:05:06 am »
Greetings everyone, looking for some advice, I recently purchased a very nice original Dunbar popcorn wagon engine. It was shipped to me and arrived with a damaged governer. It was insured and need a little help on determining the monetary cost or repair or replacement of the governor. It is bent pretty badly and I am afraid that it being constructed of yellow brass will break if I attempt to straighten things up. That being said can anyone help on a replacement one or approximate value of the governor so that a damage claim can be filed?

Thanks in advance for comments and advice

First of all for future reference.... The sender must be instructed to remove the governor and place it in bubble wrap or similar protection.  Also these engines must never be packed for shipment with foam peanuts as they are a recipe for disaster.

Finding governors for popcorn wagon engines is quite difficult.
Cretors are much more common and there have been castings for Cretors governors.

I have never seen an orphaned Dunbar governor and to my knowledge, no one is making them or selling castings.

If you are going to make an insurance claim, the price you paid for the whole engine is a good place to start.
Without the governor they are difficult to sell for more than 500-800. If insurance wants to pay only for the governor, go for $1,000. When the adjuster inspects the damage tell him you intend to keep the engine and damaged governor.

That said.... after you file a claim and get paid (the sender may need to file the claim) you might try to straighten it yourself as you may have nothing to lose at this point.

I Hope you find this usefull.

Thank you for the input, as it turns out this engine was purchased from you several years back, as the seller asked if I had posted on this forum.

Bonjour,
Lost for lost, a solution which would consist of dismantling the governor, heating the twisted part to straighten it would be applicable ?

Yes, I can!

If it's only the central steel shaft which is bent, that's an easy fix on a lathe with a dial indicator.
