Edgar Side steam engines inquiry
« on: September 01, 2026, 06:13:41 pm »
Has anyone here researched the pre-Weeden Edgar Side overtype engines which were marked "The Pioneer"? The only think I know is what's marked on the engine including "244 Marker St., Philadelphia" which was mis-stamped--should be 244 Market Street. What else is known about the maker? They are certainly a notch way above typical Weeden engines in workmanship.

Thanks Nick. I thought of him but can no longer find his website. Can you provide a link to it?

Found Bob Cutler's TEC website with his excellent article on early American makers. The "Holly" engines from the 1880s were nearly identical to Edgar Side's with exactly the same dimensions, but the maker of the Holly is unknown (Edgar Side?). Any other info greatly appreciated. Nothing on the site on Side except a photo of one of the engines.
