That is good news.

I tighten mine up by hand until the piston turns over nicely - you should  not need to tighten fully up . If you have to then the spring may be a bit weak in which case replace it or just stretch it a bit and refit.

I usually fine tune mine by getting steam up and adjusting to get the smoothest running.

Try it and see how you get on. You will soon get the hang of it.
