The reason I thought the cup was a cover for the flame is twofold.  It does not have a lip for pouring into that small hole in the tank, it would still need a funnel,  like other plants I have. And two if you look at the burner the outline around the wick is exactly the outline of the cup upside down.  I agree with you about the burner.  I have two others with the mushroom vaporizer, maybe that is the outline of vaporizer?  I need to have several vaporizers made. Maybe the cup was just something that attached to it over time.
