Minor BIX Burner Surgery
« on: April 09, 2021, 05:18:12 pm »
Just received a BIX 000 round burner from Forest Classics today, which i plan to use on small verticals.

The burner is advertised as 1" diameter x 3/4" tall with a total length of 2".
2" is correct for the total length, the diameter is 15/16" (which is good in this case, as the smaller the better)...but the height is 7/8", if not closer to 15/16".
Doesn´t sound like much, but in this case i wanted to test it on my Fleischmann 105, which at a 45 degree angle to steer it clear of the original burner platform, has room for exactly 3/4".

Was slightly annoyed that it turned out to be taller than advertised, but had noticed the ceramic honeycomb material poking approx. 1/8 above above the housing, and decided to shave it down as much as possible, to see if i couldn´t reach the goal.
Have never removed anything from the surface of my BIX burners, so had no idea whether or not removing the special pattern on the surface would change its burn pattern.
Made the major cut with a hacksaw blade, gave it a quick sanding to even the surface, and finally a few blows of compressed air, to remove the ceramic dust in the burnerholes and housing.

BIG SUCCESS!

The burner works exactly as it did before, now slides right under the 105 boiler as intended...and even more importantly, i´m happy again ;D

Don´t mind the yellow flareups  8)
I was eager to test it out, and didn´t put much attention towards exact adjustment when inserting the jet, and the jet itself is too large for this burner as well.

Cheers
Jan

I think it looks even better now, its easy to disassemble these burners & do what you like to them.

Very good to know that this can be done - I have a larger rectangular bix that could use some trimming. And it looks great too! Thanks!
