Nitrile Rubber as Drive bands

Does anyone use nitrile for their drive bands? Do you just stick the ends together with superglue?

If so, is this in 2mm and 3mm the stuff to buy?

Hey Jim, I've never tried the Nitrile bands. I have used the Green textured kind from Forest Classics.
Bought the 2mm and some 1/4" flat that I can't find right now. I used the green yesterday and it works
fine if you don't mind the color. As a rule the Wilesco springs is what I reach for.

I've got a lot of the green textured stuff and just got some new stuff in from China as one batch I couldn't join.

Saw a video of Charlies where he was running a lot of different steam toys in a GPU video and he was using what looked like O ring material.

I use 2mm poly cord ,works perfect for me , strong enough to run everything , thin enough to go round 3/8" pulleys. I am on my second batch of 200' , I use black and buy it from Dunham rubber...its pricey per foot though. I have lots of 3mm green belting , not my favourite... To stiff and designed for slippage (which it will) I simply heat the ends & join, trim off with a toe nail clippers.

Super glue will work. I have made a couple dozen o-rings over the years for my employer but I am not an expert. From my limited experience there are at least 3 types of o-ring splice kits, the basic uses CA glue, mid grade uses flexible CA glue and I had a job that requires high grade splice that Vulcanized the splice, it used controlled heat and chemicals to "melt" the o-ring cord together, this was by far the most flexible joint but it was expensive equipment for industrial use.
The short video I am going to try to attach shows a basic kit that could easily be self made with stuff you have in the shop.

I have used the black nitrile rubber for drive bands.
About 12 years ago I got about 10 meters of each size.

It may be time to re-order. I think someone in Australia sent them to me. He bought a ton of it and passed on some pretty good savings for us.

I also got a good supply of spring drive bands around the same time.

Regarding joining them, I cut them at an angle (30-40 degrees) to give a larger surface to glue together.

Yes.... a good quality superglue works really well.

Been using quite a bit of o-ring material over the years, both professionally for engine gaskets, as well for for model drive bands.
I just cut straight and glue head-on as instructions advice when making o-rings, and have never had issues worth mentioning, when using a proper brand of glue.

Thanks all, I've ordered a bit to give it a try.

The latest green cord that arrived from China is an ultra fluoro green, not like the usual dark green that I have ordered so many time before.

This cutter is not needed but thought I would share, basicly if your knife is not wicked sharp the rubber will compress to oval before the knife jumps thru then when rubber springs back to relaxed the end cut will have some contour. We throw these cutters out all the time at work but the tool is shown "open" and you push rubber thru correct hole size and squeeze shut, the round hole supports the rubber and you get better cuts, any little thing helps as the glue area is so small. Another thing is a New double edge razor blade for shaver is significantly sharper than exacto blade and thinner, this helps reduce deformed cuts as well. A homemade version of this tool would be just fine. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Clever tool that for good cuts and makes sense that a dull blade will compress the O ring.

I sometimes use the spring belts but prefer the nitrile rubber or poly sort sort, as I paint most of my engines green the bright green colour does not bother me. Depending on the type and thickness I super glue or melt the ends together free hand ( my thumb says ouch that stuff in hot)

"Found" 1mm poly cord , good for engines
Hi fellow steamer.
In my search for a diminutive drive band for my new Wiggers to drive my KG trip hammer I tried (& bought) many types of strings & such , then I came across this 0.85 nitryl/polycord that works just like the bigger stuff...simply heat the ends & butt together , this takes extra care to do as this is like working with sewing thread, but its very strong. the bends in the cord can be heated with a hair dryer under high heat for 30 seconds or so while you have the cord mounted on something that will put a little tension on it & relax those bends right out.(at least that's what I did) I found this at Wal-Mart in the crafts section,  cost 98¢.

O ring material arrived and bought some of this and it literally welds it together as strong as if there is no join -

Great news Jim :)

Use the Loctite brand of glue as well, since i am "raised" using their o-ring kits at work.
It has never failed me there, so never had any reason to stray.
My glue here is Loctite 406. Since that´s what comes with the kits, i´ve always bought that to be safe.
But 406 it is more or less a standard cyanoacrylate glue, so assume other types (and brands for that matter) will do the job equally well.
