rotor vacuum engine
« on: May 16, 2020, 08:58:49 pm »
Got this rotor vacuum engine a few days ago and it was running good . I was not going to restore it but I was  cleaning it with very light soap and the paint came off so I decided to restore it and now it will not run its dead . I made timing marks and put everything back as it was but no go . I hope some one out there in the steam universe knows these engines. I've abought pulled all my hair out

Below the whistle there should be an aluminum ball that acts as a sort of valve. Did you misplace it?
I don't see it in your photos. I see your engine has what looks like set screws on the flywheel. These
are not original. My engine has a hole drilled on the hub of the flywheel which matches up with a hole
in the shaft and is secured with a pin.

Thanks for the replies from both of you. Yep got the  aluminum ball this one  has a pin through the flywheel and shaft whit a setscrew to secure it. I don't know what the other setscrew is for just a backup setscrew I guess. it was running great I did not plan to restore it but the paint came off .I turned every thing 180 degrease today and made no difference .    I worked on it about another five hours today still no go .Any idea would be greatly appreciated
Thanks Stewart

I'll have a look At mine when I get home tonight to see how the timing is set. Another thing to look at is how well
The sliding valve fits. I had to bend the valve spring to get a closer fit on the valve face. These engines are temperamental. Experiment with flame heights and position and lubrication. I find that my engine does not work
with graphite as a lubricant for the cylinder I use three in one oil. I don't have the original burner for mine but I
made one that works.
Here's a video of mine

Yep me and Bruce Saint Paul steam talked a thought graphite would be better . That was my first  thought the problem may be cleaned it all out and went back with Marvel mystery oil still no go . the slide valve is very tight whit the slide valve closed  you can feel very good suction on the piston . I have restored well over a hundred steam engines and flame lickers but this has got me at a loss
