They say enthusiasm is infectious, well the good folks here are so enthusiastic about steam and I have never owned or even touched anything more steamy than a hot bath so i thought i would see what all the fuss is about and bought a Chiltern Model Steam Mill Engine.
OK, no skill required here, just paint, polish and put together, but that is a great starting point for a novice. CMS are out of stock of boilers right now, so i just have the engine running on compressed air. To be honest i was not expecting to get hooked, after all there is no petrol or spark plug, but blow me down, this thing is hypnotic, i love it, can't wait for the boiler now to get the full experience

And you picked a nice-looking one to start with.
Should be even better when you get the hot wet stuff running through it!!
I do like the crosshead guides on that. CMS do make some nice kits, i hope to get the beam engine at some point in the future.
You definitely picked a top of the line kit to start.
Congratulations on assembly. It looks and runs great.

Just wait till you light that first fire under the boiler

Glad we got you hooked!!
Nice model! It will run so good on steam! More video when it's on live steam please.
I will post some more pics/video once i get the boiler
It was only a matter of time Ade,enjoy the wet stuff.

Lovely engine, Chiltern certainly make some very nice kits
Turned out very nice - good job on the engine. I'm looking forward to seeing it under steam when you get the boiler.
Still waiting for the boiler from CMS, no steam yet

While i was waiting i fixed the loose main bearings by line boring the housings and inserting oilite bushes, no slop now

Repainted the whole base to get rid of the ugly paint edges, i had previously masked the machined surfaces on the base but the components that fit on them are slightly smaller so i ended up with rough paint edges and bare bits

That should make it run nice and smooth.
