Welcome to the hobby! I've been involved for about 10 months and have been trying to learn all I can.
The internet is a great source of information, and it's free. This site should give you a good rundown on many manufacturers and a good cross-section of their models:
http://www.toysteambible.org.uk/default.htm
Here are some additional sites I've found informative:
https://steamup.dk/jensen/jensensteamengines.html
http://www.alspcs.com/Jensen.html
http://www.alspcs.com/Empire.html
http://www.alspcs.com/american2.html
https://www.brightontoymuseum.co.uk/index/Main_Page
https://toyenginecollector.com/
https://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search?edan_q=%22Engineering%20Steam%20Toys%20and%20Models%22&page=0
http://www.ventix-pages.de/doll/D-Dampf/D-Alle_mit_Bild/d-alle_mit_bild.html
There are also a wealth of information on YouTube. Two of my favorites -- search for "St. Paul Steam" and for "Keith Appleton".
Again, welcome to the hobby!
