Weeden questions
« on: June 07, 2020, 09:39:33 am »
Hi guys,
I'm hoping some of our more knowledgeable Weeden folks can answer some questions for me.
While looking at Weeden engines I have noticed differences in the way the steam line leaves the boiler on some models.
in this image of a no. 17 it comes from the top of the boiler.

the same in this image

While in the image below it is soldered to the boiler.

was this a change made by Weeden during their years of production of this model or a modification made during a restoration?
I have noticed this on other models as well.

The last picture is a later model and they changed the connection to the boiler.

The earlier models (pre-1930s) had a wooden box.  The later models had cardboard boxes.

The tricky thing with these engines is the reversing gear is often missing.

I have accumulated a number of these as parts engines. I have two complete ones I have made from them.

It is the only Weeden with a reversing lever.

Thanks Charlie,
It seems that the earlier models would have had a steam dome and a whistle with hand wheel like in the ad,
or a weighted safety and a whistle with hand wheel mounted on top of the boiler.

Correct.  The later version have a screw in safety valve and a lever whistle.

It is from when they changed to the new design of safety valve.
If I had the storage space... And the money... I'd have a few more engines.

Thanks for the information,

Now I have a much better understanding of Century old Weedens.

I have recently acquired a No. 8 and it seems a good candidate for restoration, or at least a partial restoration.
I would really love to see it run again.

It is missing a couple of bits, the weight and sight glass should be easy enough to get through Weedensteam.

The foot will need to be re soldered.

I guess the most difficult piece to find will be the missing whistle.
If anyone has a lead on one I would be very very grateful.

OMG!  Where did you find a Number 8?  I have been looking for one since I started collecting. This is an Uber rare engine. Congratulations. 👏👏👏👏

One of the big holes in my Weeden collection.

I may be able to help with the whistle. I may also be able to help with the sight glass fittings; new one won’t fit.

Let me look in my parts cabinet.

If you ever decide to part with it, please let me know!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Or, if you are interested in a trade, I would be very generous. 🤠

Thanks Charlie, every bit of help is appreciated.
Thanks for the heads up about the site glass, you'll have to clue me in about why the new ones don't fit.

All of those images show the steam pipe soldered to the boiler.
I have not yet found a picture of an 8 with a set up like mine.

The No. 16 had a similar plinth for it's horizontally mounted engine.

It makes me wonder.

The add states Water Glass gauge but I have not seen a picture of a number 8 with a gauge.

I checked the newer sight glass fittings today and they should fit.  The one I had that it didn't fit on was a Weeden No. 3.

Unfortunately, I was not able to find the correct whistle for you in my bits box.  From the pictures, it looks like the whistle is the twist in type (like the weighted safety valves on early models).  Is that correct?

I will be on the look out for a whistle for you.  It will be difficult to find one.
