What´s It Worth?
« on: April 02, 2021, 04:22:02 pm »
Being kind of a novice when it comes to older Nürnberg toys, i could really use a hand here guys.

I was contacted by a German gentlemen, who´s considering a sale of his Bing 130/60?

Forgot to ask in my initial reply to him, so have no idea whether or not it has the original burner, but that could be cleared up relatively easy.

How much would something as altered and unoriginal looking as this, be worth on the open market...roughly?

While being far from original, it’s big enough and fancy enough to easily bring at least $300 USD on ebay

I concur.  Have you considered the expense to have it
shipped from Germany to the US?  While the shipping
costs for small items are now reasonable I'm afraid
the shipping costs for larger items, like this engine,
are still high.

That said, it will be a good deal if the price is right.
Be prepared, though, steaming is popular in Germany so
getting a 'steal' is unlikely.  You will have competition.

Good Luck,
Wayne

Wayne, i live in Denmark, bordering to Germany. Shipping would be just around 20 bucks, delivered within a week  ;)

I am not particularly interested in such an altered example (which he knows), and he isn´t entirely set on selling either, as it is a family heirloom.
He merely asked if i´d give an appraisal of the individual parts in his collection, as he had no idea what he had there.
Since i´ve recently purchased from him, getting an exceptionally good service, i agreed to do my best.
This engine did trouble me a bit, as i don´t really know all that much about these, which is why i made this thread, in the hopes to get an educated appraisal...which i did.

Thanks for your help guys, i have forwarded your estimate :)
Cheers

That isn't to far gone from original. Yes the blue paint, the new burgundy top over the baseplate, the
steam valve looks altered and the polished boiler is wrong. It looks like it's all there. Steam exhaust
runs under the flywheel to the stack, that's a +, overflow out the other side, +. Front and side catwalk
makes me think it's larger than it appears. Is the boiler diameter about 9.5-10cm? I would say $350-400
if it's 10cm. That's just under a 4" boiler. Here's a big question along with does the burner come with
it, does it run?  ::)

With original paint and patina it would be more like double these values.

Really all our engines are worth what someone else is prepared to pay whether they are original or not, and really is originality that important if it appeals to the individual. How do you define originality? never had a gasket replaced , never had a gland repacked , never had a pipe union soldered, a piston ring replaced, asbestos lagging changed for safer material. Personally I do not know the answer but simply enjoy my engines

I agree Brent, but not everyone has your skills. 🤠

It definitely would be worth the effort.
