Wilesco D12 or Mamod SP2?
« on: July 10, 2019, 12:26:03 pm »
Seen two engines on ebay, a Wilesco D12 and a Mamod SP2. Both in very good nick. Any suggestions would be welcome as I know nothing about Wilesco.

Thanks

Brian

I would say the Wilesco, BUT if you have the time, hold off for an older, gray-based Wilesco D-16. You will not be disappointed  ;)  It's my most-fired engine and dedicated "accessory tester"

Thanks, have seen a D16 for £120 on ebay, blue base but it looks a little rough. Will think about it though.

Am I correct in saying that the Wilesco's can only run with their own burner tablets? Also, could it be a problem that some of the 'cheaper' ones do not have a speed control?

Not correct.

I would recommend a gas BIX burner from Forest Classics - much cleaner and easier to control.

It is true that the Wilesco burner is rather confined and makes burning stuff other than square Esbit more difficult.

But using gel fuel in foil in the Wilesco burner works well.

It's also true that speed control is nice to have as well.
I recommend spending or waiting a wee bit more for a D16 or a Mamod with a lever. (Could buy a Mamod TE or roller and use it to drive accessories.)

He could have bought my D24 with line shaft and accessory for £50. I put it in the for sale section and no interest.

CBWho - just out of interest it was fitted with speed control and also used a meths burner - not so safe probably ?

Wish I had known about the D24, I would have bought it, I prefer meths burners anyway  :'(
After all of that I decided to buy this Mamod SR1a:

The steam roller has  good throttle control (has little indents), so will drive accessories well. :)

Looking forward to getting some of the Wilesco workshop drive models (when I can convince the other half, surprised that she was keen on this steam roller)  8).
That's two models I have now, this one and the Steam Wagon.

On my D16, I removed the tray as well, so I now use a Mamod spirit burner.

In regards to accessories, Mamod accessories are very nice too. For a prebuilt workshop, Mamod has a nicer one in my opinion.
