I have had many of these PMR #3 engines pass through the shop here, and with careful adjustment of the spring that holds the slide over the cylinder hole ... and preheating the cylinder with a hair dryer, I've never had a problem with any of them. 😊

I have two of the Solar #3 flame lickers like Roger's. One was produced by PMR and the other was produced by the prior proprietor, Solar Engines of Phoenix Arizona. They are nearly the same with just some minor differences in the valve gearing and the mounting, and they do both run about the same .... on a good day!

I have a heavy flywheel version like yours Rog also but it came with a circular magnetic "pad" the same size as the bottom of the burner which incidentally doesn't have a handle like yours. It is a treat when all goes well but can be irritating when it doesn't want to run right. Just an idea but you might try embedding in the base material some of the small circular "super magnets" as they're probably stronger than that magnetic material you've got now.

Larry, using thin neodymium magnets under the burner is a great idea.  I made mine from a sheet of thin magnet material, but it only holds weekly and burner still manages to move.  I will order some of those magnets on Amazon.

thanks,
Rog

The PMR #3 is a constant favorite of mine & I've had one for years, when everything's just right they really run a treat, they seem to hold they're value very well....because they're built well ! you have a nice one Rog.

I made this video awhile back, but after reading CrazyDoug's post asking for Flame Licker examples...I wanted to show this one running very well.  It took me some experimentation to get this running repeatedly, but it's there now with the only issue being it blows it's own flame out frequently, something I can't resolve other than relighting the little tea kettle like burner.

Here is the YouTube video showing these can and do run well...usually!!!
