Thrilling to see it running again Scott.
You did an excellent job on this restoration.
I have really enjoyed following your thread.
Where did you find all the riders? 🤠
-
Really nice work Scott and a great piece.
-
Thanks guys for the comments.
Stretched my restore skills but turned out OK. Don't plan on selling this so didn't mind showing the warts and all.
-
Fantastic machine Scott every ones dream ...Steve
-
Scott, you have performed a superb recovery on that beast. While viewing on my phone, I could swear some of the ladies were waving at us!

That is nice Scott, I find it amazing something so large and delicate has survived as long as it has, it's in the best of hands now ,extremely nice work 😉👍

Had some time to work on this little project.

I haven't checked in for a while Scott, but that is really coming along nicely, great work on that Sir. 😉👍

Fantastic model Scott... so much better than a Meccano big wheel ;D....Steve

This restoration is coming along nicely. Your solution for the lamps is great. I hope some day I have a reason to make some of them. 🤠
-
Nice restoration work!
-
Thanks Daniel!

Making something that looks somewhat close to those old lamps hanging from the canopy took some thought.
My first thought was to use cylinder end caps of 1930's vintage Doll engines. That probably would have worked fine.
After a bit of searching, I came across some solid brass fittings and 12mm glass globes on eBay. I used cut-down plastic tapered stoppers to secure the globes to the "shades".
One good thing about parts like this that aren't permanently affixed, I can change them out if something better comes along.

Wow Scott ... I'd be right up to being fully ecstatic if I could reliably produce results like that!
Well done on braving the next step in a fantastic restoration.
-
Next up on this project: try my hardest to paint straight lines.
I bought a cheap sliding shelf, sold as a sliding coffee maker shelf. Hope was to allow me to hold the paint brush still and have the work move in a straight line.
Used a bendable pipe cleaner to mark off the lines.
Not perfect, but I'm not planning on selling this any time soon so I'm OK with it being a little "custom".
I'm happy enough with the results.

Thanks Charlie & Bob!

Wow!
A lot of fine work going into this!
-
Wow!
Excellent job Scott.
Thanks for the updates.

What a machine...!!!!!
You are making great progress. I know you have read this before..... Did I mention you are making great progress...!!!
Thanks Gil!!!

What a machine...!!!!!
You are making great progress. I know you have read this before..... Did I mention you are making great progress...!!!
Yes, the German machines are high on details. Jensens while super stout in their build, are quite spartan looking next to most any piece from Germany.
-
Next in the queue...
Mount the new canopy support pole, mount the solo flag pole extension and flag, top with donor canopy.

Next... paint some red and blue stripes on the canopy.
-
Scott, you must have the patience of a Saint...such fiddly bits, but you are pulling them all together in a really nice piece.
THAT will be a keeper!
Rog

These German engines & accessories do have more fine points than say a Jensen.
That may be part of the attraction to me.

Some more progress.
Task was to mount the flags to a donor canopy.

Excellent progress Scott. An excellent solution for the flag extension.
-
Comes along VERY nicely Scott, well done (https://emoji.tapatalk-cdn.com/emoji482.png)
-
Better and better Scott .... nice!
-
Making up a flag pole extension.
Turned up a M3 x 0.5 brass with a 2.2 mm socket for the flag itself.
Also needed one additional canopy support. Originals are right at 1/8" in diameter.
Painted all pieces with Humbrol Brass Metallic 54.

With the JB Weld set, time to mix up some paint.
One coat on, we'll see if it really needs any more.

Good Luck with the restoration. Antico Mondo had a reserve of 2500 Euro on the same complete model in 2018, and it did not sell, six month later the Pook sells similar for 18K, crazy world
Last Dec's Pook & Pook auction was nuts.
Speaking of the December Auction Scott, do you have that beautiful Doll Whip ride working? Would love to see a video.
Good memory, Charlie.
Actually that Whip Around is in pieces wait on my restoration skills to improve :o
Mine is nowhere near as nice as some we've seen recently.

I'll certainly be on the lookout for replacement parts. I could probably make the flat gear... not so sure about the pot metal driving wheel. A bunch of the Doll accessories have these two parts.
Have you thought about looking into 3D printing for that one?
Good idea.

Holy Cow Scott, just seen the sale price of the one in the December Pook & Pook auction :o :o
You know... rite....! Wasnt it $18 Grand or something like that?
I'll take offers :D
:D :D
Would be quite a profit!
In my dreams ;)
Never say never, but I doubt I'll part with this one.

Well, finally decided to source some parts from this 729/2 Karusell. I needed the big driving wheel and the toothed gear.
Has to be a tough decision to make... will you try to copy the parts and bring the smaller one back someday?

Well, finally decided to source some parts from this 729/2 Karusell. I needed the big driving wheel and the toothed gear.
Fortunately the distance from the big wheel gear to the toothed gear were identical on the smaller 729/2 and the big 729/5. Right at 5mm apart.
Next, JB Weld on the wheel and gear.

Do you have the riders?
Do you have the top flags?

I have some spare parts from other "expendable" accessories... plotting and planning how best to do all this...

The base may be original paint. I cannot see that any re-paint or touch-up has been done anywhere on it.
Where the uprights meet the base look to be original.
-
One of the most impressive accessories i´ve seen...
Well done and congratulations Scott !!!
-
What happened to the "peanut riders" ;) :D
Do you have any pictures of what the base paint is supposed to look like?
-
I have found Ferris Wheel accessories to be the best...you have captured a marvelous example...congrats.
Rog
-
that is on a Grand scale , will be watching along with keen interest. congratulations on landing it.
-
WOW ..... what an elaborate and beautiful beast of a Doll you have there Scott .... eminently drool worthy!
-
Many of you no doubt saw this Doll Ferris Wheel on eBay recently. I put in a snipe bid and won by the smallest of margins.
The toy is in very good shape but is missing a few parts.
I hope to chronicle here a moderately successful restoration journey.
