Love that old Cunningham Lenn, and amazing historical piece...but my ohh my, you just keep pulling them out into the light...

That Mow-Master definitely is right up there at the very toprange of the coolest mowers i´ve ever seen, what a gem !!!

I got this mower about 25 years ago, i had it running at that time but it has sat in the shed since then.
Got it out last evening and new it wouldn`t have any spark so had to pull the flywheel which was the hardest flywheel to pull i`ve ever seen.
Cleaned the points and it now has spark so in a while we are going to see if it will live again.
By what i`ve found it was made by Bolens in 1950.

Thanks Swift Fox, put new belts on the Cunningham today and adjusted things so it works like it should.
The left belt drives the sickle and the right belt the drive, if ya disengage the left belt everything stops.

Finished up the Zipper, put the new drive belt on it today so its self propelled.
Tried it in some heavy grass and it did alright but the old motor doesn`t have a lot of power.
The Cunningham is next or the Jari mower, waiting on engines.

Thanks fellers, i`m waiting on a belt for the Zipper and motors for the other two, i had a brand new Predator in the box and pulled it out of the box this morn and it`s locked up tight so now i have to go 100 miles and exchange it.
Got this Craftsman reel going just now, never figured it would ever run no spark and stuck everywhere.

Sounds very plausible, that more blades will cut easier, given the smaller "bites" taken Lenn.

...but, remembering the manual ones from my own childhood, i seem to recall that well maintained and sharpened mowers, was way more fun to push around for the 50 cent a standard front lawn would pay ;D
Title: Re: Vintage reel mowers
Post by: Pitchy on August 30, 2019, 01:00:38 pm
And the answer is the more blades it has the thicker the grass it will cut.
And of coarse the one on the home build isb only a four blade, i have a six blade Scott that will ease through four inch grass.
The four blade will jam right up in thick grass no mater how sharp it is.  :)
Title: Re: Vintage reel mowers
Post by: Pitchy on August 29, 2019, 04:01:03 pm
I`m not the one to give advice on sharpening, i just free handed with a file until all the blades just touched the cutting bar but it still doesn`t cut as good as some of my other reel mowers, i`m in the trying to figure it out stage.  :)
Title: Re: Vintage reel mowers
Post by: classixs on August 29, 2019, 03:49:27 pm
Please share the sharpening process Lenn...
Guess you´ve made (or bought) some sort of jig for grinding the blade reel, to keep a perfectly even distance to the cutter blade?

Thanks Swift Fox.

Made three sections from flat steel plate and installed them and now working pretty good, theres a couple off those wear thingies that push down on the sections to keep them tight against the guards i`m going to build up with weld and grind flat.
When i get the belt on so the self drive works it should be complete.

Title: Re: Vintage reel mowers
Post by: Pitchy on August 28, 2019, 06:37:08 am
Thanks guys, that engine was in bad shape and even amazed us it was saved, Jan i used a couple different means of freeing the piston.
First it sat a day or so with Kroil oil then tranny fluid then brake fluid with a rag burning in it like a candle then finally a piece of oak on it and a three pound hammer.
The oil pump was unavailable so i left it out the engine has a dip rod on the crankshaft cap so it will be a splash system.
Bought no parts for it just soak, heat, tap and clean until everything freed up.
I`ll make a couple new vids today, i want to try the zipper in some better grass and another run of the reel mower with a new belt and some tinkering on it.

Plenty of power with the 6.5 HP engine, could of went with a three horse.

I`m going to make a adjustable throttle stop for it so it can`t run away.

Noticed the bracket at the rear end yesterday, so have been looking forward to see the cart... Nice job on that (https://emoji.tapatalk-cdn.com/emoji482.png)

The sweeper is a pretty handy tool as well.
Have a 42" wheeldriven one here, for pulling after the Husqvarna rider, and it works amazingly well, as long as the grass/leaves isn´t completely soaked.

What´s the green trolley-truck-thing laying behind the sweeper?

Our first mower after getting married was a reel type which worked great on our tiny yard - pushed easy and did a wonderful job cutting the grass instead of whacking it off like a rotary. Only bad thing was that it wouldn't cut the buckhorn but I could live with that as the price for the mower was right.......free from the neighbor's trash pickup pile. Looking forward to your motorized version Lenn - ought to be interesting!
Title: Re: Vintage reel mowers
Post by: classixs on August 04, 2019, 03:31:57 am
Grew up with such a mower as well, but didn´t take me long to prefer the engine driven versions.

Actually until a few years ago, i used a well used 3-gang reel mower (Jacobsen Green King) here, which i via a lot of dealing back and forth managed to buy from the local golf course, but in the end found it to demanding space and servicewise.

As a lawnmower, i know of no types doing a better job than these, being able to actually cut the grass instead of ripping it.

Will be looking forward to see you build Lenn  :)
Title: Re: Vintage reel mowers
Post by: Pitchy on August 03, 2019, 12:02:47 pm
Thanks Bruce, i`ve been ordering sprockets, a new 7 hp motor and other stuff for the build.
My plan is to mount one of these mowers between a couple 2x6`s in the front so it works just like pushing it.
Then i`m going to make a 8 inch wood drum for the back and chain drive that through a jack shaft to a centrifugal clutch on the motor.
Hopefully it will work.  :)
It will have handle bars on the back and pull a single axle dolly with a seat i can ride on.

I used to regularly pick up freight from "Great states" lawnmowers (formally American mowers) they made reel type mowers & were one of the last ones that did, had a friend who worked there & he told me that the 7 blade mower was much better than the 5 blade model , his job was to sharpen the rotating cutting blades & set the cutter blade (critical) to proper clearance. if done well these mowers will cut with ease. there is a sharpening tool the can run back & forth across the cutter blade to sharpen both the cutter & real cutter blades (much like a meat slicers sharpening tool works) ,unfortunately ….most owners NEVER sharpened their mower blades.

Takes me back to the days when my grandfather had a concrete driveway that had a strip of grass running down the middle.  It was my job when visiting to push the reel mower and cut that strip of grass...of course it got too long and was a bugger to mow, but fond memories none the less.

Those are nice, Lenn. I only have one older one that washed up in my Moms backyard with the last flood.  Not really functional, but a wall-hanger.
I do have a modern one(can't remember the manufacturer but it was u.s. based) given to me years ago that I use in the winter. These are great cutting machines, set up properly and sharp. And quiet, dust free and zero emissions- depending on the operator's diet. My only complaint is with only an 18" reel it takes a while to cut the lawn. And honestly the aren't too much more work than a regular gas push mower to me.

We recently ditched our gas mower and now mow our small lawn with one of these. One of the benefits is that we can mow early when it is cooler and not piss off the neighbors.

Thanks for posting the pictures Lenn.

Most people have a negative view about using a reel mower but if it`s sharp and ya don`t let your grass get long they push easier than a gas mower and use no gas and are quiet.

Yep .... I well remember the "Joy" (to be read as Misery) of pushing one of those around my parents yard for many a year! They were great at teaching a young feller such as myself not to procrastinate too long before cutting the grass, as the longer it got the tougher that job became. Not so much nowadays, what with the gas engine doing the actual work.
