Bonjour Dennis,
(Almost) not a single water leak, not a single steam trace ! What an adjustment ! You have made a really good job, this machine deserves a hull  ;)

Bonjour Dennis,
Great job indeed ! I can't wait to see the test on steam (the oil displacement lubricatour does not work with air). And the reverse ould be a great plus, even for a compound.

Good Morning Raphael.     The video above is on steam from the electric boiler .
No exhaust visible as it is piped outside

Cheers
Dennis

Well i confess ,I think this idea of reversing and compound is above my pay grade .
This was my first attempt at making reversing gear and also compounding.
I have  removed the reversing assembly.
After it is run in and I regain my enthusiasm i will try again
I think it is time I make a proper flywheel and this one is just aluminium .
Another run on steam tonight

Any further progress on the build Dennis?

It went on the pause pile for a while while i waited for parts to arrive .
In the meantime i did the bar... Clarkson .
Normal services will resume soon .

Mutter mutter fr.. reversing gear.
This is my first attempt at making reversing gear and a twin at that.
All does not go well due to not a lot of room only one eccentric has a bolt to hold to crank shaft .
The other eccentric is pinned to its mate .
60 degrees it says to give  a 120 offset .
Either my 60 “ are out or my maths or direction sucks .
I will have to make some more eccentrics and time them one at a time then pin together when running
I am still waiting for some bolts to arrive so it all may go on a rest for a while,.
Good news is last night i had it running on 10 psi of steam .
I suppose this is  what happens when you try to punch above your weight .

Cheers
Dennis

I just had the opportunity to catch up on your build thread Dennis.

I learned a lot and enjoyed the updates.

You have done a nice job on this build.

Thanks for a wonderful build thread.

Doing quite well, I say!
Dennis, these types of dummy moments are great after you find them when the solution is as easy as plugging some holes.

Hang in there, my friend. You will never regret it!

I will persevere with it and have another go at reversing .
 A flywheel will help also .
As for video ? I usually hold phone horizontal but did not want you all to see the mess on
the bench .

Bonour Dennis;
Already operating et 20 PSI? Great job indeed, the future will be positive. The next difficulty will be to set set the reverse, a steam machine always has a better way but both must be available.

Elsewhere, just a concern, keep you smartphone horizontal, better for YouTube  ;).

Well i went out and had another go at it with out the reversing gear .
And it is  a bit tight and still missing some gaskets but i did put some screws in the drain cock holes .
But it does live ( sort off )

Well i have had a couple of days off and thought I was making progress.
I had installed gaskets etc and had all the reversing gear installed and timed ??
Applied air and no joy not even any kick or any sign of life .
Thinking is my machining is crap .
Stripped all reversing off and thought ok i will go with single direction untill run in
Then try the reversing again . So here I am making new bits and had one 0f the
Idiots ( face palm ) moments
I realized why no life or kick in it .
Some idiot has drill and tapped cylinder drain cock holes and the drain cocks are not here yet .
And I have not blocked the holes up,

Cheers

Splendid layouts and execution!

I'm thinking double the cross-sectional intake area for the half expanded steam makes good sense!!!

A little bit more progress.
Drag links 4 off them and all need to be exactly the same length.
Make 8 threaded eyes but only 4 have the through hole .
Screw  eyes to 4 rods .
Make a jig for mill .
Bolt rod down through eye.
Slide table across and drill hole .
Unbolt and repeat with out moving table .

[attachimg=1]

Some other  minor bits have been made and loosely fitted up..

Need to finish valve rods  and gland nuts then the 4 eccentic and sheaves .

No extra shed time for as although our country is in a “Level 4 “ lockdown I am essential industry .
Cows and sheep still need looking after and feeding .
Life goes on as normal for me .
Stuart cylinders come with the port face holes cast in place but the steam passage from port to cylinder end i drilled .
1 hole for HP and 2 for the LP.
A good idea or flawed ? Only time will tell .

Bonjour Dennis,
I can imagine the time you need to make these little elements which have to be accurate. I spend hours where I would need minutes in my mind to do anything as soon as it it concerns my passion  ;D
Never mind, perhaps this bloody virus gives you more time to work on your CD10.
Besides this, I had a little question : have you changed the size of the intake and exhaust openings in the HP cylinder since it is smaller in diameter than the original ?
Title: Re: Stuart D10 compound build
Post by: Scorpion2nz on April 24, 2020, 04:37:00 am
Expansion links are finished .

[attachimg=1]

More chicken scratch .

[attachimg=2]

Pieces cut out and they need round bits on either side and I want to silver solder .

[attachimg=3]

Issue is how to hold in place with holes all lined up exactly ??
Had a brain  fart and thought a carbon rod would work .
So raided the welding cabinet  a got a gouging rod .
Some very careful turning to size.

[attachimg=5]

After I silver soldered buggar me the holes all lined up .
After some finishing i am left with these .

[attachimg=4]

Cheers
Dennis

Bonjour Dennis,
I fully agree with you, all my oscillating machines have a spring for pressure but these engines are new so I choozed to trust the manufacturer.
I bet, not tested before buying three and lost, I will send him back as soon as possible for improvement, I hope he will get there ....
But let's go back to your CD10 (Compound D10  ;) )

The air test is never conclusive, I have just experienced it again yesterday;

I can't wait to see the result of you steam test  ;)

Does the reversing valve need lapping and a spring for pressure to hold it down

Time to start the reversing gear.
Do the hard part first expansion link ?
You know the curved piece.
Piece of brass plate with chicken scratch.

[attachimg=1]

On the rotary table
The drill bit is on the point for the outer link.

The other center mark ( to the left i) is for the inner link..
My theory is if rull rotation of table is line the drill bit everything is in the right place.

[attachimg=2]

Then move mill table to the left and carefully mill while rotating table.
After some time I have this .
Some filing to do to finish

[attachimg=3]

Last nights effort was these

Bonjour Dennis,
Graphite, the best vintage way to d it  ;) Besides this, I would kindly suggest you to add micro grooves while your pistons are yet accessible because it is better than nothing and commonly used to my opinion.

Good evening Raphael,
It this stage no rings on pistons .pistons are a good  fit
if i need to install rings I would go with graphite string .

Bonjour Dennis,
Happy to see your progress. You have not yet installed any segment on your pistons. How do you plan to ensure their tightness ?
Viton O'rings?  Old-fashioned cotton braid? Micro grooves? On one of my D10, my friend Max made pistons with Teflon cups (coupons ŕ coupelles de Teflon) : http://www.vapeuretmodelesavapeur.com/accueil/index.html (search "piston").

 Made the steam line from HP exhaust to LP steam chest .
It screws into exhaust and will be bolted/machine screw into steam chest .
I nearly stuffed it up as just about connected it to both steam chests before i had  a brain fart and woke up .

It is just sitting there .
Still waiting for more BA bolts to arrive  so I may have to start on the reversing gear.
 I have no experience with the reversing gear but i have the plans and will attempt to bodge from bar stock .

You've picked a challenge but seem to be moving right along.
 Have you had much machining experience?

I've only made one complete Elmer Verburg  Mine engine.    It looked good but ran poorly so now I don't dare to make two great casting kits I have.

Shame since both are beam engines (Mary and ME Beam) and I've all ways wanted a nice beam engine.
I have had a little bit of machining experience.
Previously i have purchased botched Stuarts and completed.

A write up here for a Stuart beam .

A little bit of progress made .
One cylinder bored to maximum.
One cylinder bore roughly then sleeved with brass .
Brass was chilled and cylinder heated then pressed in .
Then  2.  1/8th by 40 tpi holes drilled and threaded through cast iron into the brass sleeve .
Brass rods soldered in place . This will prevent the sleeve ever shifting
Then final boring done .

So i have stuffed up before i even started  ! That would be usual .

Bonjour Dennis,
On my triple expansion, I added a steam input pipe going to the medium piston to help he reverse :

It was done on several size 1 machines.

Well i been thinking ( shock horror )  while milking  cows this morning .
As the crank shaft has not been drilled and pin in place yet I can still make it 90*
With a little persuasion . Use a bigger steam line as receiver .
This will make it self starting ( hopefully )
And as i have received plans for the reversing gear which will be made from bar stock .
I am going to be busy for a while .

After some research my understanding is direct coupled steam for 180* crank but if 90* then a receiver is needed ie a tank between cylinders .
I could be wrong as per usual

Bonjour Scorpion,
Great project indeed that I will follow with a great interest. First question, why a 180° crankshaft ? The one I bought are 90 ?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tpREH2SVi0
And the Stuart compound is also 90 :

This will probally be a exercise in futility.
A incomplete set of Stuart D10 castings .
I will endeavour to make a compound .
 Base trued and done complete with a milling hiccup,. ( not a great start )
New 180* crank shaft made , need to drill and taper ream then shape .
Bearing essentials done just need cosmetic finishes ..
Stand and trunk guide done .
The plates between trunk guide and cylinder are missing this was solved by finding some steel rod in junk box .
.it is  turned and fitted to trunk guide and the piston  rod gland box threaded etc .
