You are more than welcome Charlie, I hope you enjoyed it, and thanks for the applause!

Really, it just gave me an excuse to add another turbine to the table, that otherwise would have never seen the light of day ....  ;c)

Hey Charlie  ....  in response to the high speed ovation you provided (many thanks), I've talked another lady, not part of The Choir, to come on stage and perform a set of scales solo, just for you, as an encore!

She is of a different breed than the Wolfgang girls, but just as naked, or perhaps even more so, as her nudity is almost totally transparent.

I picked her up as a stand alone, sans base or boiler, and she does have a few minor flaws, as there are hairline cracks showing at the top of both of her legs. These do not seem to affect her performance however, as her stance still seems quite solid. Tangentially fed and axially exhausted through a very open front she is full shrouded around the circumference and back, where there is a reduction gear drive with a pulley. The odd thing about this girl is that she is put together from a material that most would not even consider using for a steam turbine, ie plastic, with the only metal being the two shafts, so I guess that Wilesco has no problem using the material in that application, as they also now use it for valve stems on their engines, whistles and boilers.

Please meet & greet ... Miss Wilesco T-90:

Missed this somehow until now (must be half deaf) - that is truly an impressive collection and I love to hear them run even if I can't past a certain point (but Maggie my cat sure could). Always intended to get one or two but never did - glad you did thought as it was fun to watch and listen to them.

Impressive collection...and noise ;D

Thanks for sharing these Daniel, all of them VERY rare on this side of the pond.

Thanks for the kind words Jan .... I think they are rather rare anywhere, as I'm pretty sure Richard did not do anything like actual production. I'd be surprised if there were many more than a dozen or so of most of the models, and some were likely even less than that.

Great collection of turbines, the sound always brings the dental drill to mind.

Really, yeah come to think of it a dental drill. Free wheeling and then, INTO THE CAVITY.
Hey Daniel, that also had a "Pink Floyd" sound to it. I liked it.

Dental drills are small high speed air turbines as well, so there is an actual direct association and not just a simple similarity!

Pink Floyd .....  huh?  "Several species of small turbine engines, grooving in a steam cave with a Celt .... descendent".
Don't know if I've got any Pict in me or not, but certainly have some Celt!

And now that they have all warmed up their voices, it is time to put it all together into what must be the most eclectic choral performance of all time. I only wish that my personal musical talents were up to the task of properly choreographing these lovely ladies, but alas I fear that I'm but a ham fisted wanna-be with a tone deaf ear. What results here may best be described as some form of synth-funk crossed with simultaneously trying to tune in three different Ham Radio receivers back during the 1960's ..... or at least that's how it sounds to me with my rather compromised hearing.

But the show must go on .... so on it will go!

Here then is the long awaited and much dreaded performance of .... ta, ta ta, ta:   THE NAKED SIRENS CHOIR

And now finally on to the last, and by far the smallest, but certainly not the least as concerning voice, the little sister of the previous turbine, and the Princess of the Choir, capable of hitting the highest notes, being somehow mysteriously rated at 100,000 rpm, and easily singing on very little air being tangentially fed and axially exhausted out the back. She has a unique spider mount with four arms that attaches by threads around the front shaft bearing boss, but remains unmounted (vestal virgin perhaps?) thus far.

There is an interesting aside for this turbine, in that shortly after acquiring her, I wound her up and broke her, being that the turbine wheels position was only held in place by a piece of neoprene tubing on the output shaft, which simply wasn't up to the task at hand, such that as I wound her up, the shaft walked back, slipping through the neoprene, until the blades contacted the back wall of the chamber and sheared one of the vanes off. Because of the exhaust design, that sheared off vane immediately exited the exhaust thus keeping it from wiping out the rest of the turbine. I contacted Richard and explained the situation, and he humbly accepted all blame, and immediately replaced the turbine fan assembly, and threw in a couple of spare bearings as well in case they had been damaged by the seriously out of balance condition that existed during the wind down. I replaced the neoprene tubing with a Dubro shaft collar on the new assembly, and all has been fine ever since!

Old broken turbine wheel shown in photos.

Next to last we have a compact, though not really small, lady that was built for Air only operations. Many, but not all of Wolfgang Engineering's fleet of turbines, were built to be steam capable, but these last two sisters were not. Tangentially fed up front and tangentially exhausted to the rear after 270o of rotation, she is capable of hitting some really high notes if provided with enough volume and pressure, as she is rated at 60,000 rpm, though just how that rating was derived is outside my knowledge base.

Next on the docket is another heavy breather, but she needs to be as she carries a built in load that does do a bit to limit her range and sustain, especially at the top end. As you may note, this is the only turbine in my collection to sport the suffix G for generator, but I believe this basic model came in three versions. The base unit sans suffix with no add-ons ... the one I have which is the G model .... and also a model designated G/L for generator/light, that included an attached light bar to give the generator something to do. While she is somewhat demanding of volumes of air to breathe, she does produce effectively on what I can provide her, and sings well for all that. Fully housed, tangentially fed and axially exhausted, she definitely lights my lamp!

Here now, let me introduce another one of the outstanding voices in the choir. Possessing a large diameter open housing and spoked wheel with shallowly cupped fins, surrounded by a tight fitting circumferential frame, this tangentially fed singer is well matched by the Noise Maker in volume, range and sustain, thus it is a near toss up which is the better singer.

Next, on to the rather diminutive little sister of the prior offering, that actually has quite a voice considering the small diameter of her wheel, which provided but little sustain. She is axially fed from the rear and tangentially exhausted up front which is somewhat unique in this lineup, but she performs well with little volume on only moderate pressure, so works well for me and my limited capabilities.

Here then .... the ST-10:

Next up is another one that wants a whole lot of air to perform properly, but is seemingly just within my capability to provide for it. No doubt it could do much better with more volume and pressure, but at least it does offer a suitable range of "voice" with what I'm able to supply. Tangentially fed up front and axially exhausted to the rear, it is nicely presented in a variety of natural metal colors, and has a fairly unique side clamping mount system to hold the wholly cylindrical body in place.

Next up, let me introduce the greatest air hog of the bunch, one that my compressor and air tank may not be quite up to giving it a full performance, and most certainly my valve tree with its diminutive valve orifice is quite incapable of doing it justice, as large volumes are needed just to get it spinning at a decent speed. I picked this one up second hand, and late in the acquisition cycle, which is good as had I got it early, I may not have gotten any more. I suspect that this one is a very early offering, and Richard's design and construction rapidly improved shortly after the release of this rather blocky, shall we say less than attractive, turbine. Tangentially fed off-center, in a totally enclose square block of a housing, while dual exhausting nearly 90o to flow, makes me think that this might not be a very efficient design to start with. Be that as it may, it does produce a bit of audible base, and would certainly perform better given adequate air.

Here then .... the T-15:

Hey now hey ... that worked so let's try another one shall we?

Next up I'll introduce you to a singer that needs little in the way of introduction, as it may well be the best known and most produced of the Wolfgang Turbines .... the Noise Maker.

This large wheeled turbine, is feed tangentially at a significant off axis angle, while the blades are capped around the outer circumference by a brass ring that is either interference pressed on, or heat shrunk into place atop the blades, which seem almost triangular in cross section. The shaft hub on one side has a circumferential flat, that would seem likely to throw the wheel out of balance a bit, but perhaps that is done to give it more "voice", I really don't know. Whatever the case, it does not seem to cause any serious balance issue, and she is quite a singer.

Here then .... the Noise Maker:

Hoping for the best here, let's see if I can in fact upload video content to the Forum successfully, I will attempt to introduce you all to the members of "The Choir" individually, and let you get a listen to each as they warm up and go through their individual range of scales.

Let's start with one of my personal favorites ... the Mini-Pelton, which while rather small, has a powerful voice and an impressive range, though a somewhat limited sustain. Powered by a tangential input impacting double side by side semi-circular depressions in the face of each blade, which in cross section looks like the numeral 3, such that the airflow is split in the center and caused to follow around the circumference of each chamber exhausting out both sides of the open wheel, thus reversing and exiting in the opposite direction, and thereby imparting nearly twice the force of that produced by a simple flat blade.

Here then ... the Mini-Pelton:

Title: Stoker's Table: featuring "The Naked Sirens Choir"
Post by: Stoker on March 01, 2020, 12:13:10 am

An audio and visual production, presenting material crafted by Richard "Wolfgang" Stethem, and performed by yours truly, on compressor and valves.

But first a bit of prelude:

Greek Mythology describes "The Sirens" as being beautiful maidens whose songs resonate in the ears of the listener so sweetly as to enchant and totally captivate their hearts, minds and souls. The Sirens have also been described as evil and horrid creatures whose shrieks and screams, far from melodic, strike paralyzing fear and dread into the very core of those who hear them. The Choir presented here will hopefully do neither .....  but you've been warned!

As a disclaimer, the use of the term "naked" references a condition that is lacking any outer covering, sans pigment if you will, and thus the members of this choir are in fact completely bare, and exposed in their elemental condition. Please avert your eyes if you are easily offended by such immodesty!

And so without further ado ...... let me introduce you to The Naked Sirens Choir in all their glory:
