An interesting set-up. I doubt it was very popular.
Probably the reason there are not many of these around.
Has anyone ever seen one of these running?

Never seen one either... but I have heard of a Weeden with a heater powered through the tracks. Went on Frank's site and found this:

The Weeden No.1 Steam Locomotive was introduced in 1931 and produced into 1933, 12" long X 2 1/2" wide and 4" high. This is an 0-gauge loco that runs on standard track designed to pull cars made by other manufacturers. A similar electrically heated No.2 was designed for The Steam - Electric Company, 400 watts of power was required to heat the water, which was impractical so the project never really got off the ground..

Agree, the sparks mustīve been very noticeable...to say the least.

[attach=2]Here is a catalog excerpt from the Steam Electric Co. circa 1930. They adapted Lionel locomotives to live steam with their electric boiler set up. Power for the heater was carried through the track, and a large 400 watt at 18 volts transformer was required to power the heating element. The arcing at the wheels must have been substantial! I have never seen evidence of one of these in existence and I have collected toy trains since 1973.
