something with air space would be the best insulator.
-
I guess cardboard would work.
Hi Tad,
It seems to work, I have no idea how thick it is.
But best to keep it dry anyway.

Hi Nick,
The manual says that the Inner layer is cardboard and the outer layer PP sheet.
-
I guess cardboard would work.

Great runner Bill! and the "want-list" grows :D
Cardboard? or poor translation?
-
Thanks guys,
I kind of like having locos small enough to run indoors.
I checked the water that remained in the boiler after the run, pretty low so I think I will limit the run to 7-8 minutes next time.
An interesting note from the instructions says that the boiler insulation is cardboard.

Very nice little loco. Runs well, too.
-
Always had a soft spot for very tiny live steam engines, great to see this running so well!
-
Well that is a real little ripper, love it.
-
I would have to rate that as being rather impressive really.
Glad you stuck with it and got her goin' for all to see.
Well done Bill !!!!

Well after dinner I put a drop of steam oil in the steam dome, oiled up all the moving bits and filled the propane tank.
It goes!!

I took about a minute and a half of video as it warmed up doing several laps.
Then I watched it for about five more minutes then took another short video.
Here is the second video
https://youtu.be/tXp9BI8tA5c
After this I let it run another minute or so and shut it off, it was getting close to the ten minute mark and I didn't know how much water was left.
Pretty good for a first run.
I would caution not to try to run on blocks, the wheels will lock up unless there is even pressure on all six at the same time.
You may be able to run it in if you have a proper rolling road but the track worked just fine. My circle is about 66" diameter, or 33" radius, the minimum recommended radius per the instructions is 422 mm or about 16.6"

It looks nice.
-
I think it will go. ;)

Pretty simple design for a "safety valve", but surprised it was blocked as it looks to be new?
Hopefully it's a runner on steam being it ran with water pressure.

Hi Nick,
Can you give me a link to the thread for that other Loco?
Never mind, I think I found it on another forum..
Yep, his posts were shortly before this forum, member @Rob1962
Did you ever get it going Rob?

I tested the Safety Valve last night as described in the instructions:
Fill boiler with water, Connect the tube, fill syringe with water, give it a squeeze.
I did not get water out of the safety valve but the engine did run across the kitchen table leaving a trail of water behind :)
So I know it will go.
[attachimg=1]
The safety valve is made like the top up valves which can be purchased for Mamod locos and such.
[attachimg=2]
A closed ended pipe with a vertical hole for the steam to escape, the hole is covered by a short length of tubing which should allow the steam to escape if the pressure is great enough.
I took the tubing off and tried the pressure test again, still no water so I determined that the small hole in the steam pipe was blocked.
[attachimg=3]
You can see the hole in the image above.
I poked a small diameter wire through the hole a couple of times and cleared the blockage.
I tried the test again and water shot out of the safety valve.
Success. :)
Tonight I will try to figure out the burner, but I think I'll need to make a trip to buy some Butane first.

I've always liked this one and only know of one other on the forum. Unfortunately, he can not get his to go, hope you have better luck ;)
