Title: Re: The House Across The Street
Post by: jkbixby on August 06, 2020, 08:28:29 pm
Just a quick update as things are still pretty hectic. We removed the carpet and padding, patched the drywall, brought a trailer load of bits and pieces every  day down from our old house, painted the whole interior of the house with the exception of the guest bedroom that had the wallpaper removed and oil based primer applied which we're waiting for to dry completely, went over most of the woodwork with Howards Restor-A-Finish which really did a surprisingly good job of bringing it up to standards, contracted for all new windows and doors to be installed (12-15 weeks from now), changed out all the lighting to LEDs, started undercounter lighting in the kitchen, and made space for all our furniture and workshop equipment that the movers brought down yesterday. Ahead next Monday is the hardwood flooring installation with the remainder of carpet being laid the following week, probably starting to construct some walls in the basement for the workshop and train layout, and, I almost forgot, a double garage full of our stuff across the street being brought over and distributed. We've had lots of help so far and it's been great knowing everyone is happy we're here in Gahanna - makes a difference. It's been fun so far and being able to walk across the street like I did last night and watch my grandson, the aspiring pitcher, practice with his dad is priceless - lots of good times ahead for sure!

Thanks for all the nice replies - I'll do an short update on how things went and what we accomplished in a couple of months. And then I hope to be back to somewhat normal steam wise in another couple of months so I can talk about something actually steam related instead of off topic personal stuff.

Really glad this worked out for you Larry! You're probably going to end up with a little more work than you want right now, but I'm sure it will be great living close to family.

Very Nice Larry .... I believe MAJOR CONGRATULATIONS are due to you and your Lady!

Hope everything goes as perfectly as possible, but having made a major but really quite local move some eight years ago now, I must confess that there are still a few "things" that I haven't gotten around to quite yet. Hope your's comes together quicker and easier than mine has!!!

About a year or so ago a slight possibility arose of the house across the street from my son coming up for sale. After a roller coaster ride of high and low anxious moments I'm happy to say we take possession next Wednesday. And not a moment too soon as we are homeless (kind of) at present as our house sold immediately and we only have a couple of weeks left before we have to be out. It'll be good to be unpacked and settled again with my steam and railroad collection but that will be at least three months down the road as there's a lot to be done to bring the house up to its' former glory (and keep SWMBO happy) - in fact most of the next year is probably spoken for but I will be starting to build a new live steam railroad in the basement as soon as possible. Going to be a lot of fun and, at 75 years old, a bit of an adventure taking on a big but satisfying project. The mock Tudor is my son's house and, across the street, is our ranch.
