I noticed these Märklin's are only filled halfway with water. (I add water until the overflow runs out.) But Mamods seem to be filled about 80% full. I don't run out of water on either for a fuel run, but it's a mmm...

I added more heat shielding from a vintage (early 1950s) Gilbert Erector set. The plates were the correct height and width for no trimming. Unlike Märklin or Mecanno plates, Gilbert are very bendable especially the odd aluminum one. (They had some aluminum parts post-war.) Notice the front of the burner area.

I had a few minutes to spare
to test my repairs.
 A repair conducted by me,
As the boiler went wee wee,
Oh what despair,
- a faulty previous owner repair.
2 seams it seemed,
Needed to be redeemed,
A thorough cleaning,
Perhaps boiler preening?
Lots of focused heat
To accomplish the feat,
Boiler seams desoldered!
Boiler seams resoldered!
Thrice pressure do test,
For hopefully the best!

(Nothing rhymes with soldered!)

I just purchased a book that might hold some interest for you- American Steam Traction Engines. It details makers and models exclusive to the States. When I can figure out how, I will upload some scans for you

The prior post shows the concentric exhaust with a bottom weep, this prevents fire extinguishing.

This photo is of another Märklin TE. The first draft didn’t have a bottom weep hole and the steam exhaust intake was higher up. When I tested that, the fire promptly went out!

The upright exhaust was assembled with JBWeld for the high heat resistance (600F) and also to experiment with different construction techniques. The horizontal exhaust with lead-free solder for 400F heat resistance.

As a tribute to the Westinghouse Traction Engine, I’ve built Märklinhouse Traction Engine.
Marklin engines are well built but they Märklin didn’t mind exhausting the steam at the earliest convenience.
