Title: Weeden #3 needs help
Post by: komet163b on January 29, 2021, 11:13:03 am
I just recently purchased a #3 engine on EBAY.  It was pretty
dirty and miserable looking, but except for the chimney and S/V
weight, appeared to be all there.

Both pot metal (or lead) top parts were loose, but I've taken care
of this problem before using o-rings.

When holding the engine block in my hand, and piping compressed
air into the top where the chimney stack goes, I can get it to run.
In essence, I pressurized the exhaust port of the engine.

I removed the cylinder and saw the crescent shaped ports.  The top
crescent (exhaust) has a small port opened into the chimney stack.
The bottom (inlet/steam) crescent has no opening to allow steam
to run from the boiler, thru the block, to the cylinder.  Hmmmm.
Ever heard of this?  It does not look mineralized.  I'd love to see a
photo of how the engine block looks from the bottom, where the steam
goes in, but I'm not holding my breath.  Same of the inlet crescent.
It looks like it might be up to me to ....

Stay Well,
Wayne
