Pump arrived safely, THANK YOU AGAIN DENNIS!!
Works quite well just turning it over by hand ;D
-
Am pretty impressed by this project, and think they came out very well.
Good job Dennis!
-
Mounted a David Auld engine unit on some wood and a meccano lay shaft
All running from my electric test boiler for ease of use
This is pump number 2 ( Nicks ) if he still wants it

Cheers
Dennis
That is great to see Dennis!!
Been wanting to ask about it, but knew they ended up being quite a headache for you, so I kept quiet. Definitely still want it ;)
-
And thos is pump number 3 which could be heading Aussie way

Hey Dennis, I was going to say, Jim's got a post in this section below yours about cutting a gear with a tap,
but it sounds like you tried that. Maybe you should just make the groove deeper with a round bottom and try
the tap thing just in the bottom. Look at a Jensen or Wilesco pulley.
Brass on brass I wouldn't think could cause a problem unless you're dealing with heat.
Heck you made it this far, you'll get it.
-
I have been thinking ( usually not good )
I am thinking maybe brass on brass with cold water is not good .
Maybe cast a piston . Just not sure from what . Printers lead type , or mazac , or babbit bearing metal .
Also maybe I am asking a lot from a small pulley
Cheers
Dennis
-
Well i think it might be a fail
First run did not work as brass pulley has no grip,for spring belts .
Filled rim with lead then turned and knurled with a threading tap .
Still no work with spring belts .
But does work with a rubber band , second issue is it not happy running one way as it appears to grab .kind of works the other way

Look better than factory made.
-
Stunning work, Dennis, simply stunning.
-
Impressive! 8)
-
It seems to have a strong willingness to lift water...and possibly not as much surge or more "even" water stream than the popular Empire unit. I believe it is the upper basin that helps even out "surge". Well done.
-
Very nice Dennis.
-
Very nice!
-
Well buggar me
Proof of concept
First time with water in and this is the result

They look OK.
I notice you countersunk the outer edge so I am wondering why you brazed the inside rim.
From the outside only enough should run to give strength without going to the inside making cleaning up easier.
2 cents worth.
Silver solder on inside as the outside rim has a groove cut for the drive belt

That is a very clever solution!! I would say very acceptable 8) Who gets the credit though? You or the elves?
-
That's some clever outside the box thinking there Dennis.
I reckon with some Dremel cleaning up they will look pretty good mate.
-
Plan B
We have a central hub with 5 holes drilled.
A outer ring with 5 holes on a angle
And 5 rods bent by eyechromotor
[attachimg=1]
Insert rods through rim
[attachimg=2]
Silver solder then some trimming on lathe
[attachimg=3]
Are they perfect ? NO
Are they acceptable? Still thinking
Cheers
Dennis
-
Well the pulley shown was plan A
While at work tonight I came up with a plan B
This might be tomorrow job
Cheers
Dennis
-
Some nice foundry work there Dennis.
-
Back to the drawing board .
F&^%$* pulleys
Turn on lathe brass to size with recess.
Then on to mill with rotary table .
Between idiot in charge , blind eyes ,fat fingers
1 1/2 hours and 2 broken 3 mm bits i have this piece of crap
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
-
Clever turning the rim over. They are looking great.
-
Great progress there Dennis, well done!
...and yup, curved spokes ;D
In hindsight you could have aimed for the square reservoir model to avoid that...but then the base/reservoir most likely would have been more troublesome?
(Attachment Link)
I think the squareish reservoir would not be to much problem
I would start with round brass tube and a steel former then silver solder a base inside .

[attachimg=1]

I suppose the next thing to make is the &*^$&* flywheels
I think they have curved spokes and then a water test
Cheers
Dennis
-
Some shed time
Turned the rim over
Only annealed once before I started
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
After some cleaning

I like traveling too much to keep your schedule!
There was an old dairy farmer near us that supposedly never slept in a bed. He would milk cows and take short naps sitting on his stool out in the barn.
-
You certainly did have a full weekend. I had an uncle who was a dairy farmer, and he worked in the shop.
Cow's came first, the shop, come home to the cows everyday.
Those pumps are looking sweet.
-
Weekend progress report !
There is no progress to report .
This weekend was Feilding annual steam fair and as usual
I was an exhibitor.
The weekend consisted of
4.45 am get up . Go milk cows .
8.00 am get home and leave in car .arrive 9.30 am setup for 10.00 am start.
4.00 pm leave ,get home and go milk. 8.00 pm home
Both days .
Tonight was clean engines ,oil and put away.
Hopefully normal service resumes .
Cheers
Dennis

Love the shot of them all lined up 8)
-
Yes they are.
-
coming right along , these are a thing of beauty.
-
40 mm pipe in lathe ( 1 mm thick walls )square on end and cut recess for last nights curved bottom .
[attachimg=1]
Turn last nights plate to size . Fit and silver solder in place .
Turn/trim to length. 2 done so 1 to go .
Need to thin the walls a bit the turn the rim over for a lip .
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
-
Look fantastic Dennis!
-
So many small parts! How many more to see them pumping water?
Getting close now Nick
Last nights work ( the shaft and disc ) are the bottom for the reservoir
which should get completed tonight
Cheers

Piston/rod assembly
A buggar of a thing to assemble i valve inside the piston at the bottom
Then the rod held in place then a 2 mm wrist pin through piston skirt
[attachimg=1]
Temporary assembly
[attachimg=2]
-

-
Fabrication of the piston rod top end
[attachimg=1]
Silver soldered
[attachimg=2]
Some cold beating of 3mm plate brass to form a dish .
And a short brass shaft .
[attachimg=3]
More silver soldering
[attachimg=4]
-
Finished the piston rod ends
Had to make a jig for lathe to do it.
[attachimg=1]
Attached to piston rod
[attachimg=2]
Made valves
[attachimg=3]
Crank web made and fitted
[attachimg=4]

How long is the production run going to be? I want in.
That could be a problem
Only making 3
# 1. Nick
# 2. Darren
#. 3. Was going to be mine
Now Woe is me wants # 1
Does this men i have to sell all 3 and make 1 for myself
No Dennis, you keep #3 for yourself. I'll keep looking. ::)
-
Work is slow
1 and 1/4 hours work and 4 bits and not finished at that
What are they ?
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]

I showed Olive some pics and he nearly jumped out of his skin and said and I quote "I am so jealous about these pumps ! 😜 Of course as a french guy he has to send one to me"!

The valved pistons are made .
need 3 but made 4 as some technical issues arose with the first one
Whos to blame, you or the elves? :D
Most likely the local Troll

These are looking great Dennis!! 8)

I hadn't realised you were building them in a smaller scale and they look very nice at this size.
Have you thought of adding an oil cup or oiling hole to the bearing?
Did you miss the clue in my first post 66% and the second photo in first post
Had no thought about an oiler yet
Cheers
Dennis

Turned 3 cups that screw into base for the upright column to fit into .
As per usual no photos .
Turned and fitted 1 upright column
Starting to see some progress now
Cheers
Dennis

You can literally see the hours you've put into these Dennis.
-
Very nice. Coming along Brilliantly, you are very talented.
-
More work on the bases
3 bottom plates and 3 top plates .
[attachimg=1]
Soldered together and some tidying up
[attachimg=2]
-
That is the second rectangle trough we know of .
could be a bit more difficult to make
-
Keep the brass sheet handy Dennis, you'll need another base for the special model Pericaud pump.
[attachimg=1]
-
we live and we learn.
-
Well i learnt something tonight.
I am a idiot .
Why did i mark out 3 parts when I was going to be using the mill with DRO.
It occurred to me that i only need to mark 1 and when milling note points
Then just follow the points for others .
Anyway a start on bases
[attachimg=1]
-
Look at all that brass, you could make 100 of these ;) :D
:D :D :D
-

-
Not sure if tonight's episode is model making or light engineering.
Time for the base
Small sheet is 6 mm plate brass
Large shet is 3mm plate brass.
Damned if I am going to hacksaw them so out with 4 1/2 inch angle grinder
[attachimg=1]
Some time later a lit of chicken scratch
[attachimg=2]
-
Oh Wow Dennis , looking really good.
-
Looking good to me 8)
-
Been doing some the bit I detest.
Finishing ..
I silver soldered because I want life time strength but the nature of silver soldered make excess removal difficult.
Any way
Cheers
Dennis

Thanks for the update Dennis, will be back for more :)

Looks like your enjoying the new mill Dennis.
Yes you would be right
Far superior and the DRO is a great addition.
Bigger and better it makes things a lot easier.
Cheers
Dennis

Some more progress
3 spouts made ( no photo )
Then highly accurate eyechrometer for 90 degree hole for the spout
Milled then some hand filing
[attachimg=1]
All 3 spouts silver soldered in place but forgot to photo
I will remedy this tomorrow night .
Now the clean up begins to make them presentable
Cheers
Dennis
-
;D
-
Nice project, the Pericaud pump is a good looking accessory and building it out of brass should make it even better than the original.
-
Great work so far Dennis, you're slave driving those elves again....be careful mate they'll get unionised :)
Looking forward to watching these come together.
-
Mutter mutter damn and blast
Silly suggestions from some one who,shall remain nameless.
There will 3 and only 3 66%. Brass ones made
Silver soldered together and when the other two are done there will be some hand filing
And cleaning up to do.
Cheers
Dennis
