Glad you were able to attend this year Jim  :)

Thanks Nick, really missed out on something special last year.

I wanted to use the bird in the vids but even turning the table even real slowly stopped it from bobbing.

It lives in the kitchen, grandchildren love it....it goes through some water I have to top up the shot glass every day.

Great video Jim 👍 with that custom stack, it definitely looks better without the canopy  8)

Thanks Nick I agree, I like it with the canopy off and that is one nice looking stack!

Okie doke not a lot different from the previous video, but it does (at least to me) look like a completely different engine with the canopy off....
A very nice engine that one Jim  :)

Agree completely, they do feel quite different without that canopy...and much easier to run, as everything is so easily accessible.

The canopy ads a bit of a headache when it come to refilling the boiler, oiling etc. Not as easy as a Mamod's that comes off a lot easier. I think I like the look of 'canopy off' Jan.

...Really like the hand sanitizer, doesn't last as long as Esbit but its easy to refill the burner tray. The modded burner tray allows me to put extra in.
Have been using hand sanitizer here for this purpose for about a decade now, since i couldn´t find any gel-fuel up here, back when that stuff suddenly stirred a major interest on the Mamod board.
I find that as long as one goes for the high alcoholvolume products, they´ll all work well for heating, but some of them does have a less intriguing smell.
My current batch is 85% (155 proof), which puts it very close to the concentration recommended by several toy manufacturer recommendations back in the day, when it comes to watering down alcohol for liquid fuel burners.

Particularly find it usefull with Wilesco´s, with their relatively large and deep burners. There´s quite a bit of room in those "buckets", once they´ve been sealed with a couple of layers of aluminum fuel.

This is all new to me Jan as I have never used esbit or sanitizer before. I'm really surprised just how good this stuff is.
Also this is my first Wilesco mobile. I use a gas burner setup for my Mamod mobiles.

Great display, Jim...!!!

I really like the rolling road set up under the traction engine.

Gil

Thanks Gil, a very simple DIY but jeez I have had a lot of hours of use out of that thing.

Excellent engines there Jim.
I have had no luck with the Aldi hand sanitizer, do they have different types?

Thanks Dave, this is the one from Aldi that I'm using -

Wilesco D406 Black and Brass Steam Traction Engine on a rolling road with the canopy off and boiler fired using hand sanitizer in a modified Wilesco Burner Tray. I silver brazed up a copper section that fits inside the burner and allows enough hand sanitizer (75% alcohol based) for a good steam run.

Quite impressed by both engines here, particularly the stirling, as that really doesn´t induce much confidence at first glance.

Well done Jim!

Thanks Jan, its just cobbled together from what looks like bits and pieces left over from other builds. I was surprised it ran!

I’ll have to give the sanitizer a try... I know a lot of the newer stuff has a higher alcohol content (made just for covid) so should burn even better 🔥

The one I like (tried a few) is a gel one from Aldi that has a high alcohol content. Smells nice too :)

Nice one Jim, clever thinking for the wheel chocks 👍 Did the sanitizer work out good?

Those fur tacks just come in more handy all the time :)

Now for something a little different here we have a Wilesco D406 Steam Traction Engine Black/Brass driving an Academy Water Pump that I have done some small mods to. The Wilesco Traktor is being fired using hand sanitizer gel in a modified burner tray -

I like that stamp mill  8)

Has the engine got enough power to belt it up to your speed reducer?

Thanks Nick, I do like that old stamp mill.

No, the engine wouldn't have the oomph to get the transmission even turning over I reckon.

One thing to keep in mind regarding these small flame lickers is that they may not shed heat as quickly as they need to in able to keep running well. As the cylinder heats up, it is far less able to form the partial vacuum by instantly cooling the flames hot air, which it needs to do for the return (power) stroke to work well.

All in all you have that one working amazingly well ..... without a doubt!!!

Great to see you setting up a table here Jim .... glad you made it mate!

That first little Stirling is actually surprisingly capable for the small displacement that it has, and though it appears to be rather poorly, or at least cheaply made, it does the job pretty well and doesn't slow down all that much when you put the load on the genny. Pretty amazing for a scam booby prize ... as it were.

Flame-lickers definitely do tend to be very temperamental, but obviously you have that one running really well now, and it actually does look to be rather well made. It is truly too bad that you didn't get what you actually bought, but for a cost of nothing more than frustration and worry, this seems to be a pretty good bargain .... congratulations on that ..... many who get scammed don't come out nearly so well !

Thanks Daniel, I'm very pleasantly surprised with the flame licker and the little stirling is really surprising as well. Its so light, so basic but it works pretty darn good for what it is.
