Well, it took a long time (including one purchase that was
a 'short round') t get to a running Marklin 4117-8. more work
to be done, but...it is a runner.
For your viewing pleasure, a quick 'First Steam' run.

Grrrrr. I am so jealous. I need a good engine for mine.
I hope to have a possible replacement from Germany soon
and I'll see how it goes then. Not the right replacement
mind you, but one that might be made to work so long as I
don't have to make any permanent changes to the boiler.
Anyway, nice addition to your collection, for sure.
Good Luck,
Wayne

Very nice job fixing the sight glass Nick.
And you did a nice job on the photo sequence of the repair.
Looking forward to seeing the video.
Thanks Charlie
...yes of course, completely forgot what i scrolled down for, when i stumbled on Jim´s picture, and got derailed ::)
Very well done Nick!!!
A fine job you did there, getting that rarity revived.
Was the engine always bare brass, or was it blued at some point?
Yes, bare brass (but lacquered). The true rarity is the original power cord that I have been after for 10+ years

I need to seal another one up one soon, I’ll try to remember to get some pictures and measurements for you guys ;)
-
Might end up having to "fab" one as well, if the leakage fix needed here doesn´t go way better than usual ::)

Nick,
Nice repair.
Mine is missing completely, so I may have to fab one up.

I have seen many solutions - but thats the first with lead - crazy >:(
You are wright - it is easy to bend Glass but sometimes you will burn your fingers - haha
I use only Silicone Rings - that works perfect.
Looks perfect now - only the handle should be from black wood not brass.
Arnold
I use homemade sliced silicone rings between the red plate and the boiler and tiny o-rings on the screws (between boiler and cover) and paper gasket between screw head and cover.
That little brass handle gets hot :D

Boiler was taped off to keep the original lacquer while cleaning off all the glue

The glue went a little past the sight glass cover, but is hardly noticeable and after a year or two when the brass dulls down it won’t be noticeable at all. I was able to flake off most of the glue with my fingernail. I believe the little bit of yellow/gold that remains is also lacquer and matches the safety valve and whistle. I didn’t want to get too carried away and remove the nickel

Thanks Arnold, but they are quite simple to bend on your own... of course getting the bend in the correct spot is another story! 😂
This one is broken, but there was still enough to use.
The broken piece can be found in the boiler will it will probably stay for a few years :D

They tried to seal it with a strip of lead and two small square pieces of lead

I suppose I better make a thread for these pictures instead of taking over Wayne’s
This was my bargain ebay Märklin 4117/8 as found
[attachimg=1]
As you can see, a previous owner got a little carrried away trying to seal the sight glass up with glue
(https://www.officeofsteamforum.com/gallery/officeofsteamforum/1/6-170321134348-11811445.jpeg)
Luckily it didn’t stick very well and popped right off after the screws were removed
