A restoration that, as previous speakers have said, will demand all the attention from you. But isn't that what makes it so interesting?
-
Thanks for the update Thomas.
As Arnold said, you have a challenging restoration.
-
The restoration is going slowly, I must admit.
I have meanwhile lifted the boiler and the pump off the base, as well as the steam engine proper.
The wooden frame of the base needs fixing, I have to lift off the sheet metal cover, because it shows some signs of rust on the underside.
The valve rods actually knock at the rear cylinder covers causing the valves to lift off the cylinders - after a bit of confusion I got a hint, and yes, of course, Carette cylinder covers usually have some cutouts for the valve rods - and they are there, but the covers have to be turned into the right position, which probably means I have to remove or loosen the piston-rod bushes, which seemed to have suffered from former "restorations", anyway...
Here are some photos for illustration. I will take my time and not hasten, I am a bit preoccupied with other things at the moment...

Very challenging - I hope you get it working again - good luck Thomas ;)
Cheers Arnold

How is the restoration progressing?
-
Well spotted, and a very neat surprice to find something like this and the funnel unexpected :)
-
Nice Save!!!

Hello again,
thank you all for your kind replies.
I have decided to start a sympathetic restoration which I will document here once in a while.
But before I start this, here the latest find - the original SV weight!!! Not visible on any of the photos supplied by the auction house. I found it when I discarded the box the engine had arrived in, lousily stuffed with crumbled papers. If I hadn't picked out every single piece of paper the weight would have gone down the drain - after 110 years... >:( :-\ :(

Well done Thomas.
This is a fine addition to your collection.
I look forward to seeing the results of your clean up and restoration.
-
Well, gentlemen,
even though I can understand your physical and mental reactions perfectly well, you must understand that I have to keep this baby (which, please remember this, is a mere 110 years old!) under close supervision for the time being. Due to Corona-induced circumstances we must also ask you to abstain from visiting the patient at the moment. Thank you.
For you own shock-treatment I recommend and prescribe "Lagavulin 16yrs", "Thamdu 10years" (in appropriate quantities), alternatively Champaign (in even larger amounts).

I'm experiencing a dry mouth, light headedness, chest palpitations. Oh God it's a twin.
That's what the warning signs were pointing at, I'm in love.
Very interesting sidearm linkage to the feed pump.
I totally understand you and agree!!!
Arnold

A VERY VERY nice engine Thomas, and it runs splendid, especially under these conditions.
Will be looking forward to see it go under steam, once you get the various issues sorted.

Thank you for your kind replies!
Here is the link to a short video, showing her run on compressed air (please excuse the unprofessional camera movements, but I wanted to shoot the vid before I go on dismantling the engine as the base needs to be fixed, and with only two hands...)
https://youtu.be/cChBFomL700 (https://youtu.be/cChBFomL700)
Runs a bit out of round, especially when you change direction - but it runs.
Maybe it is much better with steam and after fixing. Arnold
I am optimistic, Arnold,
the nozzle of the air-line does not fit the valve opening well, so I can just press the silicon hose I have attached against the (not really plane) surface of the valve. In addition, there are the many screws, bolts and links of the double valve gear - ab it too much for my low pressure compressor...

Nice find.
-
Wonderful machines. Thanks for showing them here in the forum.👍😍😍😍
-
This is one extra ordinary engine and a high class collectors item.
Congrats Thomas for this catch and best regards,
Arnold
should you want to get rid of it - please let me know ;D ;D ;D

Chimneys on both of my engines are the same. Total length is 284 mm. Bottom outside diam of chimney tube is 31.5mm and top o.d. of tube is 18.4 mm. Send me your email by PM and I can send you additional measurements and photos.
-
Thanks Thomas,
There is a photo of another larger model at the end of the video. I will be happy to make photos and measurements for you. I'm not sure but maybe they have the same chimney.

Wonderful engine. Carette engines from this period are among my favorites. I have similar twins but without the nice Stephenson's link reversing.

That is a lovely engine - could be a /3 version, a little smaller than the one I have bought. Could you post pictures (and measurements) of the chimney, please?
A good runner!
-
That certainly is a quite advanced model Thomas, congratulations on adding this rarity!

What a delightful machine .... thanks for sharing that with us!!!

Hello fellow steamers,
as I know that this forum hosts some Carette lovers (and, of course, many lovers of vintage German (in this case also French...) steam engines,
I would just like to introduce my latest Carette engine here:
Carette 642(?)/5P. I am not quite sure if the same model No was used for models with reversing mechanism.
2-cyl. with "Umsteuerung" (reversing mechanism), patented in 1906
base 32x32cm, wood with lithographed sheet metal cover
9cm boiler
11cm flywheel
built between 1911-1914 (most probably)
Missing its chimney (36cm, base 3,75cm), the weight of the SV and the handle of the steam valve only...after 110years...
Hardly any issues, the steam valve is stuck (but in the "running" position), the steam pipe has come loose...I haven't seen this size before...
[attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3][attachimg=4]
Thanks for your attention!
And, well, if anybody has a fitting chimney... ;)[attachimg=5]
