 ???  ???  ???

mmmhhh.

Strange? Unusual, no doubt.

I have rarely seen a bilingual plate with specifications given in German and French for a German-made engine. My first reaction would be: Swiss (as this plaque then would cover a lot of Swiss cantons, well, yes without the Italian speaking ones of course, while nobody will expect specifications in "Rätoromanisch" and even leave some room for export).

The engine is well made. The V-layout, which we find quite often in French engines and also some English ones, is quite unusual for German engines, imho. And I would never say this engine were English. If so, it would be the most unusual English engine, stylistically speaking!, I have ever encountered. The position of the flywheel is very unusual, too, "unusual" here meaning "not something we would expect from any of the well-established makers but surely not badly done". A home made engine? ???? Hardly. If so, with Swiss precision...

But don't the cylinder tops remind me of some very old Märklin cylinders???

If it were not Arnold asking this question (who probably has more HA-Mobil engines than any other collector and who knows a lot about H. Augsburger) I would feel tempted to guess HA-Mobil (perhaps after he had some good measures of wine from the Aargau...).

I am really curious to learn what it really is...

Well, it does look like French and the other might be German.
Nicely produced engine.  Does it steam?  And, give us a story
of how you found it.
