Thanks Larry, as it so happens I bought the burner and jet from clevedon steam.
-
The first reference I grabbed turned out to be for my Clevedon Steam boiler which says "....to ensure the gas burns efficiently, gently slide the gas jet holder in or out of the burner mixer tube until a steady, quiet sound is heard. If there is a guttering noise or a whistling, the holder is too far out; too far in and the burn will be too rich. This will be noted as a sickly and overpowering smell of gas." Hope this helps you.

What a coincidence - I am at this very moment working with a very similar gas burner and could use an answer to the exact same question!

Oops the picture is there now

I have the burner and jet pictured below. It burns ok but it is very touchy and hard to adjust the flame. I am not sure how far the jet should go into the burner, I had the jet about half way into the air hole but I am thinking it should be completely before the hole. Any suggestions.
