Carl, that is a beauty.  I found when mine was new, I let it run in without the generator attached, then hooked up the generator and lastly screwed the bulb in and out to put load on the engine.  A green belt vs. spring belt works well in creating the least amount of drag on the engine.  Just keep running it and it will improve each time.
