Hmmm....now you got me thinking about handgun brass shell cases as wick holder's as well...the only reason to possibly use them is the bottom of the wick tube (spent primer end) would be blocked, so a little less soldering to do.

I have also often wondered if I turn up nice close fitting "caps"....if I could take a (3) wick version (pictured) and run it as a 1 or 2 or 3 fires by capping 1-2 wicks to get a low/med/high power output? I suppose running a gas unit IS the way to go for variable power....

 Ceramic wick is superior to cotton
 If the pellet tin os tin and solderable then there is no issue .
I tend to make reservoir from brass or copper

I want a small meths burner to run some small engines in the D5 size....I would just order the one in the photo but shipping from UK is More than the burner cost.
  These look pretty simple to make, I have only soldered electronic wires and a little silver solder at my work.... But soldering is a skill I want to develop more.
  If anyone has any tips on making one they could share?
  I was thinking copper or brass tubes for the small parts...the remote tank reminds me of a round tin of airgun pellets...I have lots of those but( tin may rust) wondering if there is a better choice of an off the "shelf" container that would lend itself to a DIY build...I am considering an old brass door knob as fuel tank...
  Also considering a tiki torch "fiberglass" type wick rather than cotton.
hopeful some will share there builds that perform well!
