I believe there is at least as much if not more of a case to be made that Marklin made this replica cheaper by cutting corners where possible. Example: The crankshaft is rather loosely pinned together as opposed to the solid cranks of older machines. The burner is also less costly to manufacture than the original.

The companies and their craftsmen of the 19th and early 20th centuries, in many cases, took great pride in applying their best skills to what they made. Not so much today.

I often heard that the Maerklin Clone 16051 is a Replica of the original 4158/7.
Yes both are Compound engines and the engines comes close to each other - but the big
difference is the Boiler and it's Housing. The 4158/7 has a Kettle that is completely
in a casing and a bigger chimney and two ladders. There is also an entirely different
Burner that is integrated into the platform. The Clone is a Hybrid of the 4158/7
and the 4098! The Boiler and Armatures are exactly the same. I think this was made
by Maerklin with definite intention - the clone can therefore never be confused!

The 16051 is a very nice engine of good quality and will be a collectors item in the
near future - so if you do not already have one I suggest to buy one...
