Appreciate the advice and replies all, I am planning to strip this back shortly and redo the painting on it. Its a fiddly beast to do and don't want this to happen again.

Am certain it has been contaminated by oil or similar, which has stuck on there right through the sanding process.

When i repaint, i prefere to sand or blast to bare metal, wash with acetone or thinner to degrease, and then topcoat straight on there, and never have experienced anything like this on my toys.

I have however used grease to mask old tractorparts and machinery quite often, and the result looks exactly like yours...with the only difference that i aim to be able to peel off the paint in those areas.

I always use etching primer first, then filler primer. Sanding between. Gets a nice, smooth finish, and fills in surface imperfections.

I'd guess the lift was just surface contamination prior to paint. It only takes a little to get it started.

you certainly didn't get very good adhesion Jim, I know you live on the water (salt water) but if your not having that problem with anything else...then it must be the application in this instance...probably the paint, I see Keith Appleton uses etching primer all the time, I personally don't have any experience with that. I guess i wasn't much help here, but I know we have many members whom can guide you .
BTW ,how many mounting holes are drilled into that base Jim ?

Thanks, there must have been some residue left over on the bare metal to cause this.
Is this rubbing alcohol?

G'day all,
I painted this a few years ago and as can be seen in the first photo it looked pretty good, in the second photo a few years later....not so good :(

Do you use an etch primer on bare metal AND then a primer coat before starting to add top colour coats? What would you guess went wrong causing the paint to lift off in sheets? I've done a lot of painting of resto's and this has never happened before.
