I grew up in Dutchess County, NY, and it is known for being
seriously overrun with deer. Everybody who has lived
there for years knows someone who has hit a deer or has
hit one themselves. I have, my father had several times,
and my mother had one come in thru the passenger side window
(it was in and then out) while she was driving at 50mph.
Another friend hit one while riding a motorcycle and wound
up at the bottom of the pile. These deer are also big-time
carriers of the Lyme disease. If they were not cute, they
would be gone.

My fam is from Poughkeepsie NY same issue as upstate [roc] ny where i grew up. Lyme disease is super serious and Im all in favor of culling deer herds. They supply a benefit to nature but when overcrowding they really encroach and become a pest. one deer O hit i brought to the restaurant i worked at in roc hoping to slaughter it but the liability is to great. only do farm raised venison. I had stowed this in ny back seat of my 2000 grand am gt circa 2005 completely stupid about potential parasites. Gladly i never experienced it but as a 20 y.o. I felt i had hunted my own deer!

That's a real bummer. I keep a knife and an Alaska game bag handy in the glove box in case I need a consolation prize. Rutting season + hunting pressure gets the deer going in all the wrong places.

Larry, I'm glad you are all uninjured.
As mentioned above, the car can be replaced.
True there are no good values at the moment but this is just where we are.
Just wondering if a lease makes any sense given they might have high end-of-lease buyouts which ought to keep the payments lower. I don't even know if this makes sense..... just thinking out loud.

Glad ur ok its just a car. Make sure all cars b4 u buy are looked over by a mechanic or get it up on a lift yourself. I had 1 deer hit me, ran into the drivers side of my car from the window down i swear me made eye contact and I saw the face of satan. was. young buck with horns. This occurred in Rochester/Upstate NY.
2nd and 3rd time I hit one wrecked the front landed on the hood. I replaced the front end myself taking a month and ordered headlights and headerpanel via ebay and banged out the dents myself. First day back on the road I hit another deer. I also hit re-order on ebay. same exact parts. my anxiety level driving at night is thru the roof fortunately deer arent a problem in san diego. just gotta watch for the homeless here in san diego and they move much slower.

Oh my , I'm glad you folks were ok & that your Son came quickly to your aid , cars can be replace (sometimes with a bit of difficulty) but people ...not at all.

YOU GET A NEW CAR ! Nobody hurt but what a mighty whack in the dark of night at 55+ - took a bit to realize what had happened. The car (and the deer) were totaled 50 miles from home but luckily my son was available for a ride. And not keeping up with things in the car world I found out that the lots weren't full of new cars, actually the opposite. We finally found one at the fifth dealer but it was bought out from under us by the couple that had an appointment for five minutes after we arrived. However, we did sign up for the one (1) that is due on the 16th. And absolutely no haggling on the price, in fact they actually added a "market adjustment" in the neighborhood of $500 which wasn't bad as some I found out are adding on $1000 or more. I just love deer rutting season!
