I am inclined to agree Jeff. I am looking forward to actually receiving the engine and getting to run it first hand. I have blueprints and could put it back to original design, but since I a!already have a mint early 10v, I will probably leave it as is as more of a curiosity. I guess we,all see!

Hi Doug ,I don't think that the valve design on this engine is one that Stuart Turner had planed. A short story while I had my Stuart engines at the local show I was approached by a gentleman who built a 10V and he asked me how I was able to get the engine running with the supplied drawings and castings, I said that I had a learning curve but it really wasn't that hard to do .
He examined my engine a little closer and pointed out that I had the air connected to the wrong port ,he said it should be connected to the center of the cylinder casting to balance out the pressure. I said no the air goes into the steam chest and the internal D valve exposes the stem ports timed but the eccentric.
He was trying to get his engine to operate by putting air pressure into the exhaust port ,he said since he was a great engineer he was able to correct the problem .
I went to a local museum and they were trying to get a  steam engine running by piping compressed air into the exhaust to a point were they gave up and called it a vacuum engine .
Some time a lot of knowledge is lost without common sense, I suspect that the builder was frustrated and got it to run the only way that he knew how .Jeff

Great chatting to you yesterday ,god bless

Actually, it runs beautifully. I was surprised too!

It does run well, but with air supply connected to exhaust pipe.

Something is not right here.  I see an exhaust pipe, but no inlet pipe.  To me, it looks like it would need a valve chest/valve cover over the sliding valve with 6 holes to contain the incoming steam as the valve directs it to the top or bottom of the cylinder.  I overall like the engine very much, but think it needs one or two more parts to be operational.

Hi Doug ,I'm sure that I have one but it's going to take a while before I can put my hands on it because I just had my knee replaced .Jeff
Hi Jeff,
I still have the beautiful early 10v I got from you, but I am looking at one that seems to be variation of that early design. Whether or not it was done by stuart, or someone else's mod is what I would like to determine.

Yes, I have found what may be an early version of a Stuart 10V.  I know it looks like someone might have made up their own slide valve assembly, except that would probably have taken more talent than just making the correct parts.  Also, the capital ST (Stuart-Turner) in the cylinder casting makes me think they put it there because there was no valve cover.  And, I know that the socket head screws cause some concern, but they have been around since 1910, which a lot of people do not realize.  Either way, they don't look like they have been recently replaced!  And, it is an interesting enough engine for me to decide to purchase it from a friend.  I will have some more information after I have received it.  [attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3]

Left one is the earlier style that looks like a mini #1, have you found something different?

I am interested in a picture of the Stuart turner 10v from this early catalog.
Thanks,
