Wow...heavy duty.
Well, as I see it there are two questions to be
answered. Is the continuity good? And if so,
what is the impedance/resistance in ohms?
Regardless of what is says as to voltage and
power, depending on the answers to the questions
above, it may be usable.

So to the question of this thread "You ever buy something and shortly after ask yourself why???".
Why O' why did I let my brother show me (literally) boxes of Steam Engines, accessories, and parts this last weekend?? Then agree to fix the Jensen for the Empire... which what I really wanted was just that cool Windmill! My brother is a sneaky bastard I tell you! So here I am, never before searching out "Steam Engines". I was perfectly fine with my Wilesco D10 Steam Engine (https://www.officeofsteamforum.com/general-discussion/wilesco-d10-steam-engine/) that I have had since my 1st bday!

The heater itself is stamped 230V 4400 Watts. I have taken the end cap off and was hoping to rotate it so the position of the pipe plug would be at the bottom. It is currently 3/8” NPT but has enough metal to drill and tap it for 1/2” NPT. Was hoping to find a large enough immersion heater, but it’s not as easy as I was hoping… I did find a 750 Watt, 12” long for $30 but going off the reviews I don’t know if it will keep a head of steam… I just want enough to have the engine tick over… the boiler is 6” diameter, 22” long. I have a few emails in with some heater companies and found one that could make me a 1000 Watt heater, with the current 3/8” NPT thread and 14” long, but they said delivery is 3+ weeks, so I assume coming from China and they want $174.20. Ideally, I am guessing a 1500 watt heater would be a much better choice, but they are 3/4” NPT and may be taking to much metal…

Have you already tried the boiler with 110 Volts - I think it should work, needs only much more time to heat up.
But the other way around does not work - because the wires would burn up. ;D

If you are in this hobby for a while you have probably asked yourself
why several times. Why am I a sucker for Elektro's? I guess it is because
I think they are cool. I have that under control now.
This engine is cool, but that heater setup is positively the most massive
looking heating element I have ever seen, outside of a stove. Have you
checked it for continuity and measured the resistance? Is it 110 or 220?
The engine for $1650.....seems a bit steep unless it is a true rarity.

This is good stuff - with a portion of skill and perseverance can be made into something quite beautiful.
It's just work you have to put in - or you leave it as it is and just play with it!

To the title of your thread here, ever buy something......hell yeah. Too much.
That brass engine in the last photo, have seen those on eBay a couple times a
year. That's all I can tell you, they're out there.

Great info Gil! I first contacted the seller on January 31st. He had a picture of another engine (shown below) in an antique shop so I got his number from a lady at the shop. She told me to be patient with him as he is nearing 90 and has a dozen or so storage sheds all over. I gave him a call and he said he had a show around Valentine’s Day to get ready for, so wait till after that… maybe March he says :D Called him again early March and he said he knows where it is but would need some time to get to it… Called back on Friday and he was just heading out for the weekend, he said try next week. Called him right away this morning and got there just in time before he was leaving. :D He did show me the pictured engine in person, but I did not recognize the maker and he’s pretty set on $1650 because it’s brass or bronze.

You did quite well, Nick!
You didn't waste the drive.
You came home with a nice engine... even if a bit heavy.
I believe those engine castings were offered by Strelinger, Evray, and others.
Many were sold to blacksmiths who added machine tool work to there skill set and built them for their customers.
Since it came from a blacksmith, he likely built it for himself.
They rarely have the reversing linkage installed.

I know that it’s big and heavy 😂
Came from a guy in his late 80’s that used to have a couple antique shops. He says he bought it from a local blacksmith in 1993 and it has sat in his basement since then. I had high hopes when talking on the phone that I was going to arrive to a Sipp engine/boiler, I was wrong :D

Don’t know where I’m going to put this or what I’m going to do with it, but I was already in the guy’s basement, an hour from home, the price wasn’t bad and I didn’t want to drive back empty with the price of gas 😂
