Title: Re: Polish School Steam Engine - help needed with eliminating engine knock

The stethoscope is a good idea. I've been using one for years. The only drawback I have seen is on gas engines where communal noise can drown out your problem. Didn't think to use it on these engines, thanks Dennis

The stethoscope is a good idea Dennis.
I think I'll just leave this one alone. I don't want to be in the situation where I think to myself "I wish I could roll back time 1/2 an hour and not do what I just did".

If you think that is  the area  causing the knock
Run it again with something held sideways against the axle .
If it silences it then strip it and install some shim brass or other wise then run again .
If that solves the problem then you will need to
A forget about it
B. Bore it out and install a new bearing .
Also a helpfull hint
Buy your self a stethoscope. Remove the round piece and install a blunt long needle
(I have some)
This will help greatly in isolating leaks and strange noises .

Note The brass shim is only a temporary fix to confirm 0r deny problem

Cheers
Dennis

I would dearly appreciate some advice on this engine. Do you think (after watching the vid) that this is where the knock is coming from?

If so, what's the best way of going about eliminating it?(The camera didn't really pick the knock sound up all that good, its definitely there though).
