Another great run, Thank You for posting

Stirling video 2
https://youtu.be/DOuR52PYLKQ
-
I agree Allan a bit of a blank canvas to mod as you please, a nice steady runner.
-
I think Mamod have hit a niche in the market with the Stirling, a well made and good running loco that's easily adaptable to your own taste, it's a good price too.. :) Allan.
-
I was impressed to see the load it was pulling , lovely little runner, congratulations !
-
Thanks Nick it runs as well as my Roundhouse Jennie and I am sure it will run at slower speeds as it runs in, weldone to Mamod you get a water top up and pressure gauge.
-
Great video Starfire, thanks for posting that :)
-
Yes real slate chippings from the garden quite heavy, this was its 4th steaming from new.
-
Seems to run nice and strong, with what appears to be a fair load, if those are real rocks in the string.
If it runs that well, I reckon it to be a good engine!

Many Thanks for posting these high res images & video Allan. It proves my point that you not get what Mamod is currently offering, as the shop low res images are of a different Stirling!
Your enhancements have certainly improved on the Plain Jane look. Nicely done.
What is going on with the buffer beams? There is a very visible gap between the top of the front buffer beam & the loco's running plate (why?) and they've clearly got the mounting hole for the rear centre buffer coupling in the wrong place as the buffer is mounted above its cutout in the buffer beam?
Interesting to see that here is another Mamod loco that suffers from erratic speed bursts. We experienced these on earlier Mamod locos (William, William II, Mark 1 & Mark II) but a discussion online failed to find what was causing them. What we did discover was that they occurred less when using the thinner ISO 220 steam oil, compared to 460 & 680 steam oil. But those were all externally fired locomotives, whereas Stirling is their first internally fired loco. Maybe something to do with their design of steam turret used which is allowing some water to be carried over into the steam pipe which is being flashed over into steam occasionally? The other common factor is they are all brass boilers - there was a hint that the Stirling may have had a copper boiler but presumably dropped due to cost?
Be interested to see one running in a garden railway environment in due course.
Chris Cairns
Thanks Chris.
As I said earlier, the Stirling is not as refined as either Accucraft or Roundhouse so there are a few things that will probably be tackled as time goes on. This is a completely different beast to what Mamod normaly produce and so cannot be expected to please everyone. I'll be taking it to my mates soon so we'll give it a proper steaming. I've had this rush of steam with some of my Accucrafts as well Chris...Allan.

Runs great. I bet it will be a nice slow runner on your layout.
Thanks Dave. I'll give it a go if my knees ease up. It's a pretty smooth runner for a new engine apart from the steam surge now and again but that should ease as it gets run in, it's an amazingly quiet burner as well.......Allan.

Any link on that tender option you mentioned Allan?
I might could use one to tow some R/C gear behind my Ruby!
No info' yet but I know it's for RC.......Allan.

Nice loco cant wait to see your reviews have one on order now.
You won't regret it, they should be easy to customise to your own liking. They're bringing a tender out as well. .. :).....Allan.

Here's a video of it on the rolling road. Hope it works........https://youtu.be/RtXWaRbVmYo

Looking very nice with the enhancements 8)
Thanks Nick,
I thought it needed something to break the bright red a bit and it seems to work. Got to give it a good workout yet to see how it compares to the RH Bertie and the Accucraft Ragleth. Waiting for my pesky arthritis to ease first though... ???...Allan.
-
Nice to see one finally in the flesh. I really like the extra enhancements you fitted Allan, certainly improves it from the standard loco.
Yes it was a bit plain, I thought a couple of boiler bands, a SV bonnet and a tool box would boost it up a bit. :) Allan.

Thanks Paul. I haven't tested it properly yet but it's looking promising. My arthritis is my big problem, can't do anything when it plays me up... :(

My new name plates came today from David (VPRO). What do you think?. The safety valve bonnet is from DJB engineering .... Allan. :)
-
It's not quite as refined as a Bertie perhaps but it has a pressure gauge and a filler valve so you can fill the boiler while in steam. It is certainly just as well made as the Bertie and has a very controllable slow speed. I'll try and do a comparative review with Bertie if my arthritis stops playing me up......Allan.
Sorry, dropped a blob ::)
-
Forgot to ask does it come with the new scuttle they sell for the Telford and Beattie as standard Mamod have said it is going to be standard with new engines thanks.
No, it doesn't come with the scuttle but I hope they give me one.... :)....Allan.
-
How does it compare to a Bertie Allan ? still not much about the Stirling on the internet and Mamod have been quiet about it recently on their Facebook page no full reviews yet, thanks.

Looks like a very fine little loco.
It's got a few teething problems but nothing serious, nothing different to Roundhouse or Accucraft. If someone is thinking about a live steamy I don't think you could go wrong with one of these, they're built like tanks..... :)

You certainly have another fine addition to your fleet. Congrats! :)
Thanks Dave. :)

Thankyou Allan sound positive I quite fancy one of these.

Nice report Allan ... I hope Mamod does well as reward for its efforts in getting this little beauty to market!
Thanks :) I think it will do well, it's got all the right bit's. It can be regauged from 32mm to 45mm and no cheese head bolts either ;D
Allan.

Right gentlemen I gave her a run today on my rolling road and she ran well. It took a bit of time to light the burner so I took the jet out and cleaned it. It seems to be a common thing in some new engines. The burner is very quiet even on a high setting and makes plenty of steam even when turned down low. There were a few teething problems, the safety valve was blowing off way past the 40psi mark so I had to reset it, seems ok now and lastly steam was blowing past the rubber washer on the regulator spindle,I tried another and the same thing happened so I replaced it with PTFE tape and that seemed to cure it...The top one in the picture is the original with the rubber washer and the one below is the one with the PTFE tape. Note the thicker 4mm lever shaft on the lower one to take one of my own levers. I might sound a bit picky but its a new venture for Mamod and I think they've done a great job especially for the price. There are a couple of awkward things on it like the oil filler cap and oil drain valve are difficult to get at and the water level plug on the back of the boiler is impossible to even touch so I fill the boiler to the top and withdraw 35mm to leave space for steam. I find it a very well made and attractive loco, it's certainly got character. I am very proud to have the Stirling as part of my locomotive collection. Congrat's Mamod :)
Allan.

According to U tube it would take 2hours and 30 min's to upload so I gave up.....Allan. ::)
-
I believe that I will always hate computers myself.
But to be more helpful than simple commiseration, let me ask, is it a YouTube video that you are trying to upload? If so I should be able to assist, if not all I can say is that I've never done it any other way or from any other source.
-
Trying to upload a video without success at the moment. I still hate computers... :-\
-
Very nice loco
Starting to get seriously interested in these small scale models
cheers
-
Hope you can figure it out, would love to see a video ;)
-
Its certainly a very nice looker Allan.
Thanks Jim. I'll give it a go today, me number plates are dry now. More pic's later....I'll try and do a video if I can but being a computer idiot I can't promise... ;D
-
Its certainly a very nice looker Allan.
-
It's gauge adjustable 32 & 45mm.
Allan.
Even better .... thanks for that info!
-
That is actually quite handsome and looks like it may prove to be capable as well.
The flanges set at 45mm on this one?

Ditto...
Very nice addition to the Frog & Ferret Railway, congratulations !
-
That is a nice looking engine cant wait to hear how it runs.
-
That's a good looking engine, well worth the wait I'm sure. I'll be very interested how it runs and compares to the Roundhouse Basic series.
Thanks Larry. I'll steam it up tonight if I can, just fitted some number plates so they'll have to dry first.
Allan.

Here's the underneath....Allan.

Thank you good to be on both forums very interested in the Stirling I would like to buy one in the future if the review is favourable,
-
Looking forward to your review a similar engine to Bertie, cant wait to see how they compare.
Welcome starfire .... glad you've jumped right in and found a topic of interest to you!
Hope you enjoy your time here and become a regular contributor and qualified steam junkie like most of the rest of us!!!

Be very interesting to see what it is like Allan, i must admit i'm keen to see how it would compare to one of the basic RH locos since it is in the same price bracket.
I'm going to compare it with my RoundHouse Bertie because they both have slip eccentric forward and reverse, however, I ordered it last Friday and it has not yet arrived so we'll see >:(

Also looking forward to reviews and seeing it in operation!!!
Fingers crossed.... ;) Allan.

Be interesting to read your review and thoughts of it. My only complaints from an athetics point of veiw is that it should have done head a keen bolts for the tanks, but this is a minor thing to correct. I'd like to know how it performs more.
You have to take price into account Jon. I don't expect Accucraft or roundhouse detail but I do expect good mechanical and build quality..... :)
Allan.
