I also recommend a replacement boiler.  Ebay has new ones for $70

That tarnished muck could be sign of a rotten boiler? Seems suspicious.  Also the crack, how did it cracks? Was the water frozen at some point?

Thanks for that coal scuttle idea . For a while , I have wanted some accessories for my little Wilesco traction engine, so I have to make one of those things !

Thanks guys, I did try for a long time before getting a stepped cone drill bit and it was just utterly a frustrating experience.

This roller has so many problems.....I thought one more won't matter all that much.

Thanks all....yes life was too short for buggering around trying to get those screws in. Simple method was
to drill that hole and make a removable coal scuttle.

Jim - very cool idea - you cut a hole in the rear cabin
to handle the small screws - top solution and it
still looks perfect.

Cheers, the original ones I pulled out where both cork, I didn't realise until I opened the package that these are rubber/silicone or the like.

Dry should work, but a thin bead of pipe joint compound (the old-style curded Teflon type would be my preference), might not go amiss.

Be interesting to hear what the experts say, I'd have just stuck it back together dry, it is just rubber gaskets isn't it ?

Replacement bits and pieces finally arrived to have a go and see if it fires up and runs, do I just install with gaskets dry?
Long time since I replaced a sight glass in any boiler.

Mucked around with sounds like serious understatement, especially considering the rust muck left inside of it all these years. I'm sure you are right about him dropping something ferrous into the boiler as I can see no other way for that rich thick rust muck to have formed!

It will require a whole lot of luck for that red mud not to have gotten into the steam pipe and cylinder, but perhaps you are over due for a little luck on this project!?!?

Thanks fella's, this is one of the most mucked around with engines! He admitted that when he was a boy and he had it he fiddled with it a lot.
I'm thinking that he must have dropped something ferrous into boiler like nuts or bolts.....when I broke the sight glass more to get it out I found why
I was having difficulty removing it as it had been bedded into silicone.

Having that gunk in the boiler, the pipes and cylinder can't be far behind. Good luck with the cleaning.

Jim, I would be inclined to get a new Wilesco boiler with sight glass and retaining ring installed...what you have looks to be a problem child!

That there's ugly. One way to look at it is it can only get better,  or go into the bin.

They would have needed to mix their drinking water 50/50 with WD40 to walk :)

Oh, that looks just delicious!

Shouldn't be anything iron inside that boiler, so perhaps from the house pipes of the tap water that was used to fill the boiler?

I must say that rust looks a bit excessive to be from that source however?!?!

Thanks fella's.
I did eventually get the broken sight glass out yesterday.
Back story - someone through a friend found out that I'm into steam engines and they asked me if I could fix their childhood steam engine 'toy' that hasn't been out of its box for 25 years!
This is 25 years of water in a boiler......what do you reckon the rust is from?

Been there done that .
Do not take any short cuts .
Completely disassemble the roller and remove boiler from chassis .
Some of those screws look dodgy and non original .
And while the boiler is out remove the screws and also in my opinion unsolder the ring from the boiler as it is a weak spot on their boilers . Flatten the edges to get a good solder .
Any more help just ask .
I have had more than 1 wilesco here to repair boiler

Cheers
Dennis

Can you fit this in or will ratchet hit sides? Or Use a wrench on screwdriver bit.

Hey fella's,

Any hints on how to get to the screws to replace the sight glass on a Wilesco Old Smoky Steam Roller D365?
