Thanks everyone for following along!
The big question is though......how many more days could you have kept going with your collection :)
But, who says I have to stop? 😆 I would like to get to at least 600 by the end of the year, but am not going to do daily… it was a ton of work!
We’ll call this #367, #368, #369 and #370 (more closeups on the way…)

Nick much appreciated and quite a task you've set for yourself (& completed) I viewed much of your posting , although I didn't comment on a lot of it, but was interesting to see non the less. Thank you for doing this. 😊👍
-
Congratulations Nick!
Well done sir.
I thoroughly enjoyed your challenge.

I had thought about doing that with Sterno, but I had some gel arrive today that I’ve never tried from Sterno. The weather was also decent so I headed to Lake Itasca/Mississippi Headwaters and enjoyed the day there instead. Grandpa stopped by the post office and picked up my burners for me :D
[attachimg=1]
-
That is a sharp engine (looks unfired) I wonder if Wilesco got a bump in sales after Mamods demise ?
Currently unfired, didn’t know if it would come with Esbit or gel burner… ended up ordering gel burner from Forest Classics, but I wasn’t home and it’s now sitting at the post office. Hopefully firing it in the next week or so.
Just for general information, Sterno has always worked just fine for me in a standard Wilesco "tablet" burner. It does NOT leak out the holes when on fire, but rather turns sort of leathery and becomes a bit stiffer. The side holes actually help it burn better.
If concerned about the minor residue left behind, it does wash out with soap and water, or you can line the burner with foil first and then just dispose of it that way.
-
Day 365: wonder if I’ll find one more item to finish this challenge off tomorrow… 😂

The red/brass combo sure goes well together, I like it on my D21 and D12 too!
Wondering if the number on the bottom of the base means anything? 244th built??
-
Wasn't there a movie titled "Pretty in Red"?
Don't think they had Wilesco in the title nor credits however!?!? ;c)

Mine had $14 shipping by and I could tell the seller didn’t want to pay any more than that! Was tight in the box with the base against the top and bottom and boiler top against the bottom of the box, no packing material. It’s a miracle it wasn’t dropped one time denting the boiler!
-
Board mounted and not tin based ..... yeah, I'd say that was a super bargain to be sure!
I managed to score a tin base #30 a few months back that was essentially like new, nearly unfired, but with a slight dent in the top of the boiler. The dent came out pretty easily and almost completely, to where you have to really look for it and know it was there to begin with. Felt like I scored pretty good on that one at $67, but with S&H plus tax it came to a bit over $90. Still, one heck of a deal on a fairly rare engine.
Your wood base is even rarer I'd say!
-
Day 361: here’s a 30 for you, not the prettiest but recently arrived and couldn’t turn down the $90 BIN price!

A Jensen #90 is Uber Cool, but a bit weird as well. Not sure I quite "get" what they were really thinking with this one, but I guess Atomic is about right it would seem!?!?
Picture #5 is a bit of a mystery however as it seems to be only about 1/3 as much in the numbering sequence, so how the heck did that one slip in there??? A radioactive mutant perhaps ..... ;c)
Look closer ;) it’s still the 90, they just lined up perfectly 😆
Yep, you're right, I must have been temporarily blinded by the radioactive emanations from that awesome powerplant!!! {8>0=

The Jensen #90 is a crazy cool plant & a real attempt @ innovation from Jensen mfg. be sure to drain all the radiation out of it after each run, don't want to sprout extra fingers. 🌝

Looking at the colors on the base I have to say Plank.
I have seen one before on eBay DE.
-
Absolutely never seen the like of that bad boy!
Would love to see it in operation!!!
I agree, I want to see this guy run and all around demo. There is a lot going on for the engine, if I am looking correctly the engine's steam that it expels fills up the water tower and keeps the water wheel going, then that makes the hammer go? How cool is that!
-
Absolutely never seen the like of that bad boy!
Would love to see it in operation!!!
Carette was one of my guesses, which was also suggested by Oliv. I plan to try it out very soon!

Here's an idea for your last shot. You dug them all out and
dusted them all off. Go out with a bang. Not a BB gun.
A group photo. ;D
I have put them all back as I’ve taken pictures, but to be honest, I haven’t touched any of my engines yet that are stored away elsewhere…

I hope you've got all these mentioned and listed on your home insurance policy, because you have all the photographic proof now!

Nick I just wanted to say I admire your tenacity. You've put a lot of good items up for all to see for nearly a year. I knew you had the inventory to swing it, very impressive collection.😊 thank you!

Ah ha, so Cretors didn't make them that small, but somebody else has scaled them down more recently.
May not be better than having an original, but it is awfully dang cool anyway, for certain and for sure!!!

That one is just a tiny little bit prettier to the eye, but I'd certainly settle for either of them in my collection ...... let alone both!

I guess I’ll have to share the other one before answering that ;)

Interesting, does it struggle to maintain enough steam to run consistently?
On a windy, cold April morning when it was filmed, yes… inside the house, no 😆
I also had a smaller fire going to keep from damaging the paint. And I didn’t want the wings flapping too fast because I can’t fly and I’d never be able to catch it if it took off 😂
I wish they would have made the mouth or tongue move, have it do a little something more… oh well, the kids like it 😆

Now you are getting into old toy train ephemera, Nick, this being Bing about 1910. I have half a dozen of this ilk on my layout. If this grabs your attention, you should check out skeptic49's you tube videos of his layout!
I really like this lamp, Nick. its so dainty & fragile looking, the fact that it survived in this condition is amazing.
Yes, not very exciting though 😂

@Inge, I have seen plenty of his videos and like other’s layouts but have no interest or room to build one of my own! I do have about 2-3 dozen Bing/Märklin/other German o-gauge locos. This was purchased to go with one of my Bing poppet valve engines.

Perhaps Geoff did that painting because the wood was unattractive and detracted from that otherwise stunning model?!?!
-
Haha, just teasing 😜
I picked this one up second-hand from VerithinGeoff, who I am not sure is with us any more… I would like to take the black paint off the base that he added to match it with my other Peakes and look original again. The brass does have some nice aging on this one.
-
Why yes, now that you mention it, that is delightfully subdued and "comfortably" patinated!
On the other hand, I don't actually have anything against nice bright well-polished brass ....... other than the work of doing the polishing!! ;c)
Don't believe I've ever seen that little beauty before .... yet another amazing treasure from your seemingly bottomless treasure chest, there Nick!!!
-
Day 319: Since @Stoker likes “patina” ;) and I don’t have time today to polish my #6, here is a very special Ben Peake engine, believe it’s one of his firsts and one of a kind…

Day 317 in progress… I will likely have 20+ hours into polishing up these 12-15 year old Peakes that I’ve been sharing… probably another hour or so into searching the carpet for a spring and nut the other day 😂

Hey Nick
Was that Vulpine Triple originally made for "Swift Fox" Philip?
Yes, it is one of a kind… he was selling off a bunch and I jokingly said if you ever let this one go, to let me know first… glad I did!! :D
Major Congrats Nick, on that one of a kind, seminal acquisition!!!

@Stoker The Peake #5 was a batch of 15, the first 6 had a valve added to the steam line and were labeled Venus, the other 9 were labeled Mercury. I have a #5 Mercury but have not found a Venus available…
-
Okay, I'm surprised. I thought it must be the double acting L.E. Minor that you didn't have, the way you had described two versions of one of Ben's engines, and you only had one of them?!?!
Must be a different Peake model you were referring to.
The L.E. Minor is supposed to be a VERY Limited Edition, with hardly any made, like maybe only 20!

Nick:
Do you have a complete collection of Peake engines?
Charlie
There is one that he made two variations of depending on when you ordered, I only have that one variation… but I also have a one-off triple from him and his first engine which there is also only one of.
I will make a family photo after I have shared them all…
Great!!!

Hadn’t thought of that but I did pick up an engine to go with them ;)

Day 280: recently picked up some Lutz Hielscher pieces from MiniSteam’s warehouse clearout. Doug posted the dimensions, but they’re even smaller than I was expecting… so small and simple but I love them!
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
[attachimg=5]
-
Oh Hell Nick ..... you are still most of a dozen short of the whole "J" series Microcosm (OKMO), Jin sourced Stirling Cycle engines, so if you have a problem, it is just the missing members of the clan.
As far as you only collecting "STEAM" engines ..... I'd say that all your accessories rather seriously belies that lame assertion!
Nice family portrait, by the way.
:D :D :D
I knew there were more but didn’t know that many more! :D
I better stay off eBay…
-
I have scrolled all 49 pages again - so many wonderful and extraordinary treasures.
After all by favorites till today are Day 266, 267, 268. What a great collection and
I hope to see a lot more...Congrats Nick
Arnold :D
I will have to include my nice 1/2 HP Sipp soon if you like the previously posted one ;)
The majority of my collection and most of my 1880-1930 engines are at another location so I haven’t been able to include them yet…

Day 267: the Cretors #6 from the sale. Was very pleased to find the original paint and striping under the dust. Needs a good cleaning still… serial #6661
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
[attachimg=5]
[attachimg=6]
-
Bet you are really glad you went to that sale!
WOW .... and a big Sipp too ..... Double WOW!!
I think that third engine would be a total WOW also, if it was seen alone, without such unbelievable competition!!!
I actually missed the sale and was only bidding on the online lots while pitching bundles at a threshing bee :D
It was a 2 day estate sale with 2 rings going and was a 2 generation collection. The woods was full of boilers and full size engines, probably 100 whistles on the sale.

What did you do Nick, take those photos with a microscope? ;c)
Haha it does look quite a bit bigger in the picture!
I did it again! Traveled to a show with no service and missed a day so I’ll post one now and one in a couple hours 😉

Day 251:
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
[attachimg=5]
-
😂 😂 😂 just seeing if you guys were paying attention. And I have had my first fail of the thread, I was out in South Dakota with almost zero cell service so I will have to post the last couple days…
the real Day 250:
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
-
my wife would have not been happy with me bringing that into the house....with all the dried mud on those wheels....lol :D
-
Well now, that is certainly something SPECIAL all right ..... but I'm having a hard time picturing that on one of your shelves?!?! ;c0
-
Day 250: 110HP Case
[attachimg=1]
-
I have a couple Bing locos with the same design. I see tomorrow is day 250, may have to dig out something special…
Day 249: can barely read the Bing Werke stamp
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
-
Box and all .... how cool is that!?!?
Even cooler is that horizontal flywheel in the cab with a single oscillating cylinder. Seems that would have made it even more steam thrifty for longer runs, though perhaps with a bit less power. In any case .... all very cool!!!
You are now well over 2/3rds of the way done, on a job that is very well done!
-
Day 248:
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
[attachimg=5]
[attachimg=6]
-
I would love to bring a few there, especially my Bowman 234… I was traveling Rollag all weekend with a Stuart steam hammer, even displayed it in the new blacksmith shop 😁
Day 247:
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
-
Nick
you should bring these locomotives to the St Croix RR and see if you can get one all the way around the Highline, approx 1000 ft.
I looked for you at Rollag, but did not see you. I will post a video of my firing activities on the big Bucyrus Erie shovel.
-
I've had that very thing happen to me well more than once, even after providing specific packing instructions that included "please make sure the boiler is well drained".
Heart-breaking to say the least!!!
-
Day 246: unfortunately this one had very good original paint but was shipped full of water and wrapped tight in bubble wrap from the Netherlands and suffered quite a bid of damage 😔
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]

I’m seeing plenty I have forgotten about 😂
Day 238: unfortunately this one was damaged on its way here from the UK
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
-
Certainly seeing all kinds of things that I have never seen before!
-
Nick, This is a great show..!!!
-
Day 237:
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]

Day 236: Early Bing? Windmills, shame that if you even think about touching them more paint falls off…

-
Day 233: another ugly old one that I must’ve felt bad for 😂
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
-
Day 229: no idea of the maker and probably not desirable pieces, but they have to be very old and can’t be too many survivors so they deserve to be shared 😉

Dates I’m not sure on, just know the lighter green would be like 30’s or later and darker green earlier.

Correct, once I have posted tomorrow’s picture I should finally be halfway done 😂

I've always really liked that windmill with the donkey driver.
Sadly, mine has a cracked blade on the windmill that is going to be hard to affect a repair and is very delicate as it sits.

Day 48: Empire #48R Giant Stride Swing Replica by St Paul Steam
(Attachment Link)
(Attachment Link)
I was going through this thread looking for "Empires" I might have missed. I have to say (sure I have said it before) this Giant Stride Swing by @St Paul Steam is a fabulous reproduction. While I have an original I wished its seats where green and not ivory. I wouldn't change mine, ever, but that doesn't stop me for wishing for it to have green chairs. It just makes so much more sense (especially when I know the ferris wheel's chairs are green).
I recall one coming up for sale and I almost put my hat into the ring, kind of regret not giving the effort. I think this replica is pretty special and has a proper place in a Empire collection.
I don’t remember any replicas going up for sale
It was about a year ago (https://www.officeofsteamforum.com/ebay/empire-'giant-stride-swings'-48-(replica)/msg56818/#msg56818) when @St Paul Steam put it up on eBay - after I won my original one. Or I am pretty sure he re-listed it and it sold.

It is really hard to justly comment on your offerings in this thread Nick.
The depth and breadth of your collection is simultaneously inspiring and mind boggling ......... and me, with an already well boggled mind!!!
I wish I had more time to reply back to all of your comments too! But I really only get time to take a picture and post it, very busy right now!!

Preceded by Psantama (Peter Santa-Maria) Blue Thunder Gen-set with lights and voltmeter .... another personal favorite and perhaps the best model steam generator at that point in time, when he was putting these out. Good bang for the buck if I recall correctly as they weren't too badly priced, especially considering what you got!

-
Chedder Westbury mated to a Jensen 60 boiler in blue.
Looks stylish and likely to perform very well indeed!
It's a #75 boiler.
Doesn't look long enough to be a #75 boiler, but perhaps it is just the angle and the perspective that makes the boiler look so much shorter than the engine?!?!

Perhaps that was actually meant as 20 "scale" feet?!?!
I don't think so, later ads (1878) claim "Here we have a perfect little Steam Fire Engine that will throw a stream of water fifteen or twenty feet"
-
That's a nice one Nick! I don't recall seeing any etchings that look like yours, I suspect it was made by Union Toy Mfg in the late 1870's but I'm not sure.
Here's an ad from 1873 showing the cylinder mounted on top of the boiler. Note that it came in two different sizes and two different configurations, plain and ornamented.
I find it interesting that it's supposed to shoot water 20 feet.

Mine came in a very nice wooden box.
As I recall, I bought the last one new from Mini-Steam.
Do you have the box Nick?
-
For the displacer to work properly, there needs to be no physical contact between the cylinder walls and the moving displacer. It is a fairly close fit, but with more clearance than a slip fit.
The power piston is more like a regular steam engine or I.C. piston/cylinder situation, with it needing to form an actual gas tight seal arrangement.
-
When I look at this I can only wonder how the cylinder internal tolerances were maintained. You couldn't machine the glass after forming without affecting transparency. I like it!
-
That must be their most basic and simplified Stirling ..... and yet it is done with obvious elegance and style!
BEAUTIFUL!!!

Day 119: I owe a huge Thank You to Charlie for this one. I was bowling with my kids and on the way out to the car I looked at my phone and had an oh sh** moment realizing that the auction had ended. Charlie had won the engine on eBay and seen my post on the forum about it and I ended up with the engine soon after 😊

That's not a Buckmann? I've got one just like it, cork safety valve too.
So what do we call them? That picture of the Ryder Large Horizontal looks
like it but the description says its cylinder action is double and valve
action is slide. I thought these are oscillating cylinders. Correct me.
That's a mistake on my website. It's an oscillating cylinder engine, designed by Ryder. I'll make the correction as soon as my hosting company gets the website back on line. I had to convert paper records to an online database, so a few typo's were inevitable. Part one of the article (https://www.toyenginecollector.com/toys/article/and-then-there-were-toys-part-1) explains about Ryder. When it's ready, part two will cover Buckman.

Am I correct in thinking that the cylinders, flywheel and engine frame are some form of original, while the condensed milk can boiler is just a modern expedient to be able to run the engine?
I can't offer an opionion on the burner, Ryder didn't include that detail in his patent (https://patents.google.com/patent/USD5004S/)for the Two-Dollar engine. :D

Am I correct in thinking that the cylinders, flywheel and engine frame are some form of original, while the condensed milk can boiler is just a modern expedient to be able to run the engine?
The whole thing is a new build (30 years old now) by Russell Snyder. I purchased all of his molds for flywheels and cylinders last year. The boiler is also brass, so not a condensed milk can 😉

Not so easy when you have several piles at multiple locations 🤣

Hard to remember? Do like I do, stand in front of the pile every day. Pull one off, shoot pictures,
then put it over there to start the done pile. :D Like digging a hole, then move it.

Me too!! Actually, it was likely made by a boy of ordinary intelligence. This comment will make sense very soon. I suspect Nick knows what I'm talking about.
@Nick
Here's one more (restored) example of your engine. My take on these engines is that the variations in the steam pipe are not the result of production changes over time, but are the result of more than one company/individual assembling the engine from a parts/castings supplier. That's speculation, of course.

Day 95: here’s a rare, early one… likely 1870’s/80’s, not sure on maker…
(Attachment Link)
Nick, when I bought that beam engine it came from the guy you got this from.
He had them both listed and I went for the other one. When I came back to this,
it was gone. You got it. At the time I could only afford one so I chose the
beamer in my Avatar. Look at the filler screw and the safety valve on top.
Well my SV is also the steam regulator valve. S- curve wheel and cylinder.
I remember this like it was yesterday. You got a nice one.
I have not had this one very long, and this one was up for bids, not a buy it now… Maybe I bought it from the next guy? Or there is another out there? I did think of your engine when looking at this one.
-
It sort of HINTS at being a Proto-Weeden?!?!
Nice one Nick.
Does it have a Safety Valve?
What is in the hole in the middle?
Have you run it on Air or Steam?
The lever and weight for the safety are missing, just a hole in the top.
The one on the Smithsonian site shows a chimney in the center hole, but it doesn’t look original
https://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/nmah_847241
I have never done anything with this one…

Did you ever make a video of it?
I have not played with it yet, picked up a spare Stuart boiler last summer to pair it with. Here’s a video from when crazydoug had it. Smashes the nut really well! I have been saving large bubble wrap for the kids to pop with it :D

I thought Bruce had one and smashed a hot dog with it. It will definitely crack your eggs.

I like it! It was obviously marketed as a toy. It would have been less expensive than an $8.50 Holly in 1880. It sort of has the feel of a nice model engine that's been left a bit rough so it can be sold as a toy (e.g. the flywheel has not been machined). Most of the toy engines in the 1870s and early 1880s did not use slide valves -- to keep the price down.
One name that deserves more research is George Parr. You wouldn't know from this ad that Parr made toys, but in 1875 he took a couple of his engines into Scientific American. One engine was a small 1/2 HP engine for powering a single lathe, etc. The other was described by the author as a toy, which was running on his desk as he wrote. Unfortunately, as he wrote, he did not bother to describe the toy engine on his desk. This company went away in 1878.

The only model engine, or model engine castings in this time period I've run across with S-spokes, not counting the Peerless, is Goodnow & Wightman. They were still advertising with this artwork 1907. Most of the small manufacturers were too cheap to include artwork, so we'll never know what their engines looked like. I don't have access to one, but I think Goodnow's catalogs come up for auction from time to time, usually by tool collectors. I haven't found out much about them, their ads were common, but all used this same artwork. This engine in the is obviously is too big to be your engine, but it might be a lead.

Nice one Nick.
Did you ever make a video of it?
I have not played with it yet, picked up a spare Stuart boiler last summer to pair it with. Here’s a video from when crazydoug had it. Smashes the nut really well! I have been saving large bubble wrap for the kids to pop with it :D
https://youtu.be/kcGYqzda7EU
-
That Stuart, in bare metal finish, looks a bit like a dirty industrial gray, which is realistic for an old shop tool!

P90 wet sump 3.2 to 1 reduction gear box.
Amazingly industrial looking unit with a lot of potential.
I do wish that they had made the pulleys to the same shaft size, so that by switching them it would be easier to arrange for an even greater reduction ratio via the belting.

Yes ;) I have copper, black and silver and two different variations of the plastic housing ;D

@Nick
What criteria do you follow to select your daily 365 posts? Is it easily accessible?
No theme, just whatever I find close by :D The majority of my engines are stored away from me, so if I am near them I will have to get abunch of pictures taken to include here.

@Nick

On the end of your log?

If you were that old Nick, I'll bet your base would be cracking and lifting too ..... I know mine is! ;c)

I knew it was a Doll (Carette made one similar) and it was confirmed to be a 347 (with missing wood base) by Jürgen and Olivier.
-
I am curious too as to the Maker.
I have two similar models.
I will start another thread and post mine.
-
Your first and third pictures show that this one still has the decal as well ...... etched in carbon it would seem.
So? What is it???
-
Day 88: Today’s arrival, I have another in very nice shape that I don’t want to run because it has such a nice decal so I was happy to find this cheap BIN the other day

-
That is a nice boat, and thanks for the pictures of the boiler. It sure looks like it has Union Toy Mfg DNA. I can confirm it's an old boat!
-
That's a nice boat Nick. The offset dome might be just for running the steam line to the
starboard side on the engine. It sure looks seaworthy to me.
-
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Dome is off-center
[attachimg=3]
I now have a correct threaded plug
[attachimg=4]
And it screws into this boiler which is shorted
[attachimg=5]

They would have to send me a Mr. Power steam engine since Craftsman tools are now replaced with Chinese tools ;)

The Wilesco D5 could be (can be) bought in kit form. Here's an unassembled (https://www.toyenginecollector.com/toys/tag/SS090) D5/CS from 1983

Nick, are striving to get all the sizes? That would make a beautiful display.
Sure would be nice! But the only other I have is this rough one…
[attachimg=1]

Elegant.
Did Jin make it?
Here’s the manual that came with the helicopter

When I posted the Helicopter, we were wondering about the OKMO manual. Well Jin now has a facebook with both Microcosm & OKMO listed

A really nice SPS Special.
Great work Bruce.
I don't recall having seen this one before.

Missed getting one of those, but now kinda wished I had!
Oh well, as prolific as Jin (Microcosm) is, don't suppose I could ever hope to get them all .... and I certainly haven't!!!

Day 78: A Märklin that I had missed in Eberhard Lüthke‘s sale in 2017 because I was waiting for other pieces. Luckily Gil won it because it went too cheap and offered it to me at a fair price at NAMES. I was also lucky to find the magazine in Germany that features this very engine.

That offers much of the elegance of the larger engines, with a much smaller footprint.
Certainly not a bad thing when the shelves are full up!
These simple, little ones with lots of color will always be my favorite!
Mine too Nick.
Did you buy it off of eBay recently?
I was tempted to make the seller an offer.
But, I have been on a bit of a buying spree lately and I am quickly running out of room again. ;D
Yes, I made quite a few offers back and forth, he finally took my last one available. He’s had some nice stuff and been collecting for a long time.

Okay Tommy ..... I'll bite.
Just who are the Johnson sisters ..... inquiring minds want to know???
Well Daniel that was from along time ago and a place far far away.
Ran in to one a couple of years ago and now it was like ooooh noooo,
and I'm sure she thought the same about me. :D
Heck she don't hold a candle to that three legged Buckman, and it

If you posted this engine without the stack and Bing emblem on
the firehouse, I'd of never guessed Bing. Have a couple of Falk's
with the gearing for the water pump, never seen that on a Bing.
Good one Nick, keep it up, just 294 days to go.
-
Geezo Nick, you sure have a lot of engines I've never seen before. Never seen a Bing with gearing like a Bowman.
Love the miniature mushroom head burners.
They have at least 3 of these Bowman look-a-likes. I was trying to find the single, but guess I got stuck with the twin :D

That Wilesco D455 is both gas and electric? How? Or should I say wow.
Electric, what you see on the bottom is a drain valve ;)
Bruce did make a few dual-fuel engines though

Trev sure made some neat little steam plants!!!
He made my table look good last weekend. The stamp mill was borrowed out during the picture to another guy to play with :D
(Attachment Link)
You were definitely playing, and winning, at BLINGO with that table full of Trev's Treasures!
I've always liked the three cylinder "radial" engine as a unique visual treat. Too bad the stamp mill isn't on that table too, it would have enhanced an already amazing display no doubt!!!

Don't believe I've ever seen one of those Nick ..... you've sure been hiding lots of way cool stuff!!!
Unfortunately this one will never be fired as they are very common with cracked fireboxes after being fired.
I don't mean to get out of line but mine was fired and has at least twelve cracks in the fire house.
I took it apart and it was packed between it and the boiler with polishing compound. That may have
been the problem with expansion. Didn't know they were numbered, have to check mine.
Oh Nick if you know how to move this up into place please do so. Thanks.

Is the egg breaker your original design Nick?
The hammer was a double hammer from Märklin Metallbaukasten book, I added a bunch of extra pieces to fasten it to the engine, but two hammers was too much for the little engine. I built it around Easter time so the egg breaking idea came to me and I slightly modified it a little more :D
The kids thought the eggs were a little crunchy but that’s because they kept hammering till some shell was embedded into the white 😂
-
Love the engine ...... Love the contraption!
Looks like I'm not the only one who does!!!

I never knew they had a marine engine and boat. Oh that boat, gosh Nick I love that

A great Steamco Family Portrait.
Thanks for posting it Nick!
-
Got me beat there Nick .... I only have one of the boxes.
You actually have all four (4) of Steamco's products there, as the Marine engine was listed as STC-02 (and was sold separately [real rare]) while the boat itself qualified as STC-03.
At least that is the information that I have in my files.
-
Here’s my 3
[attachimg=1]

Steamco, the only collection that I have complete (I think anyway), and yes, they are very stout and willing runners! Sad that they are no longer in production or readily available.
Do you have the boat they made?
Yes, the only one done in white that I've ever seen. They were usually done in either dark blue or burgundy.

AW come on Nick, I've pulled bigger things out of my nose before.

You need to show something really big tomorrow for the Bonus Day this year.
At the request of Charlie @txlabman I have found one of my biggest engines for this years “bonus day” February 29th, Day 60! I hope you are not disappointed ;)

One of the great benefits of this 366 day challenge is that you are going to have a great digital record of 366 items in your collection.
You need to show something really big tomorrow for the Bonus Day this year.
I’m sure I can find something big for tomorrow…
-
I think you're right Daniel. The chips along the bottoms shows the same color inside.
No chips, I had to go back and check! It was taken on a cloth backdrop and the camera/editor did that. I was looking at the pics last night and thought “I don’t remember the base being broken…”

I have always been a fan of Böhm, same as Karsten Gintschel.
-
Day 51: Böhm Windmill, arrived today. Saved this one in my eBay watchlist a couple weeks ago hoping to get an offer from the seller but that never happened. He also had messages turned off so couldn’t make an offer… after looking at it too many times and wanting one for too long my eBay finger got the best of me 😂

[attachimg=4]
[attachimg=5]

Hummmm
That one looks a little rough Nick!
But rather uncommon over here, for all of that!!!
I think it will polish up quite nice 😉
Will probably run it for the global power up as is and have some fun with it first 😀

Always wanted an elbow engine, even though they never existed as a full size steam engine, as far as I know.
Finicky little buggers as I understand it, and it looks as though they would be, but a good one will actually run pretty well according to videos I've seen.

This one came from Ed Saley with the custom work done :)

I just watched his video, he tried to steam it but all I seen was a blue flame all
around the boiler. Then the video stopped. Darn it, would have liked to seen it go.

Best guess is that it will never run REALLY WELL, so perhaps it is best as shelf jewelry, something more of a museum piece.
The Hope Diamond is truly beautiful, but I understand it is no joy to actually wear, as a sort of long reach for an analogy I suppose.
-
Still not fired, not a air engine, not a steam engine, but a shelf queen...lol

Lovely ... and rather small as I recall?!?!

The Wilesco T125 is by far the best Wilesco steam engine made imho. A precision made & efficient turbine.
Agreed, and the gray base D-16 would be the engine I would recommend to anyone getting into the hobby
-
That's a sweat looking engine, love the color scheme, like a D21.
Wish I would have grabbed one when they were still in production.
-

I agree Bruce. Mine is still sealed in the box. Nick encouraged me to buy it, but I am keeping it sealed for now.

Also, one of my favorites!
-
Both Charlie and the Hogg are great favorites with me!
Does the hand crank ever catch Charlie in the back of his left leg? If so ..... man, that has to hurt!
As an aside that has almost nothing to do with this, my district's County Supervisor, neighbor and friend (Dan Totheroh), is the grandson of Charlie Chaplin's most commonly used (essentially his personal) video photographer from about 1915 on into the 1940's working together on dozens of Charlie's films!
That would be starting out with hand cranked movie cameras in silent films!!!

eBay seller was Jin+steam+Engines, brand on eBay was listed as Microcosm and came from Guangdong, China like his others.
-
Interesting.
I've never seen anything like that come with any of "Jin's" engines before either.
-
Elegant.
Did Jin make it?
Here’s the manual that came with the helicopter
[attachimg=1]
-
I have not had a chance to steam or run it on air yet…
-
I was lucky enough to get one of these M31's from Jin at what I thought to be a very good price. Also managed to score its big brother twin the M30 for far less than I think the quality is truly worth!
-
Nick:
I couldn't recall if you ever made a video of this one from Jin.
It doesn't look like it has ever been steamed.
A really nice model.
I am really enjoying your 365 day challenge. I look forward to finally making it to MN to see your collection in person.
Cheers,

I've seriously considered buying one of these for awhile, just never hit the button. Do you have a video of it in operation Nick?
I tried to get a video, but now it’s stuck in the ceiling ;) :D
Haha, no, but I hope to give it a run some time in the next couple days… I definitely think it’s a good buy if you get one in the $70 range
Nick:
Sounds like you will need to buy another one to rescue the one stuck from the ceiling!
-
Wow, Wow, Wow!
Who is John Coleman?
He was an eBay seller when I started collecting that went by the name thesteamchest and a talented machinist. He sold a lot of S50 governor kits
Thanks Nick. He's definitely talented.

I rather think that Jin is just a member of a group that does the manufacturing, and that he is one of possibly a few different members of the group that acts as an outlet for the group. Don't know if he "buys" from the group wholesale, thus acting as a middleman distributor, or if he is actually acting as a frontman for the group.
In any event, he or they often start the sale of a new product offering deep discounts, acting in the capacity of loss-leaders and trial balloons, to gin up public interest, then eventually settle into a fixed price point that works for them over the long haul.
-
I believe so, the eBay seller had Jin in the name, but the box/instructions were different from what I’ve received in the past from him… I have seen them sell a lot in the $45-75 range.

-
Hey @Nick - that is just like mine! I been wondering if my sight glass fittings had been replaced because all the other #646 photos I have seen are slightly different. It is great to see yours and mine match. Your chain seems to fit much better than mine around the back wheel. Mine seems to be exactly the same design but doesn't line up on all the teeth 100%.
Thanks for posting it - it looks to be in wonderful shape! It is great to be able to compare too.
Edit:
Actually my fitting is square and not round like yours. Not sure what I was thinking when I first looked at your photos, so now I am back to not 100% sure if they are original or not. I am pretty sure they are Weeden parts. They might be replacements or perhaps at the end of the Steamroller run they changed shape.

Now there's an engine style that you don't see just everyday .... or any day for that matter, as I believe this is the first time I have ever seen that design!?!?
I like it though!!!

I wouldn't mind seeing that contraption run :D

Day 16:

[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]

Really like that pale blue/gray color, looks very industrial!
Agreed, I like it better than Stuart green and I just picked up a very nice beam with the same color. Think I have a number 8 as well hiding somewhere…

A Stuart 7A is the motivating power for my pencil sharpener.
That is something I need to do for a show!

Day 13: Philcraft Penny Engine
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
-
What wonderful workmanship!
Wonderful.
-
That would be truly amazing if it really can spin the genny fast enough to make it light up. Not only is the steam engine too small to believe in it being able to work up enough power, but so is the generator.
Still, I want to believe!!!
-
Oooh...I like this one.😊

Day 12: Arrived this past summer, don’t know if it will have enough power but it sure looks nice! Smaller than a Jenny Wren

Is there a theme or are you just randomly selecting an engine?
Are these new pictures or are you using pictures from your files?
No theme, other than arrivals from the past two years or a select few that I kept from storing away. If I get real ambitious I may dig a tub out and find some neat stuff… some engines may have been seen before, but all the pictures will be new.
-
That little beauty looks to have a minimum of run time on it.
Don't see those hardly ever!
Yes, very minimal, none at all ;D
-
The paper under the boiler strap may be there to keep the boiler from rotating while running. I've read where the 85's were notorious for doing that.
I’ve heard and experienced the rotating boilers and Bruce has confirmed it. Funny that they couldn’t cut a rectangular gasket for under the strap, but I guess that’s Jensen using what’s on hand :D

The paper under the boiler strap may be there to keep the boiler from rotating while running. I've read where the 85's were notorious for doing that.
-
Nice one Nick!
-
I think the flared ends on that boiler speaks to the split cylinder issue that we sometimes see with Jensens. Which is to say that the press is mightier than the elastic modulus of the material, such that ramming a slightly oversize endcap into the end of the slightly undersized cylinder C-bore, stresses the walls of the cylinder. Later, under thermodynamic load that stress becomes telling .... or so I think?!?!
Not too sure I'd have ever let a boiler looking like that out of the shop. In fact, I'm sure that I would not have let it out, but I suppose that is just my years in QA talking.
-
This is a real treat, Nick!
-
That certainly is an odd duck, the flared ends I've never seen before. the paper Gasket is completely original, I have had several 85's with that Gasket.

Day 3: Jensen 85 - This is unfired and was given to employees of Marlborough Sheet Metal & Design Ltd in Calgary, Alberta. It may look like the ends of the boiler are flared out in the picture… they are, I have never seen it this bad in an 85 but I can only assume the end caps were too large… Another funny thing is the paper gasket jammed under the boiler strap. I don’t know if this was accidental at the factory or wedged under there because the boiler strap wasn’t tight enough… it can stay for now since I won’t be firing the engine. I also didn’t have any NOS burners easily accessible today, so I stuck a Dean Williams homemade alcohol burner in for the picture. I was able to get a very close paint match using Rustoleum textured paint.

Nice challenge Nick, you sure you have enough steam items to fill the quota. 😉😁
I don’t know as I’ve just realized it’s a leap year! Might have to take the 29th of February off… :D

This ought to be a very good thread and year of photos!

Well Nick, you are most certainly off to one hell of a start!

I don’t make any New Year’s resolutions that I have to try and stick to, so I thought I’d challenge myself to posting a picture (or more) of one toy steam engine/accessory per day to this thread. I might even throw in a hot air engine or two if I find one 😉 Some of these may have been shown before but the pictures will all be new. Let’s see if I can do this… :D
