I think this is the sort of thing that you'll be wanting:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/171265153829
A note of caution, as there appears to be a newer version that may not fit your older TE, so be sure of what the differences are and what you are getting!
Or, from the USA side of the pond, there is Mini-Steam, but unfortunately theirs is currently out of stock it seems:

Most likely you plan to make your own, so the above links should help pattern your steering rod!
Show us what you come up with!

Got it running, even better on sterno than hand sanitizer. Took the whistle apart and it sort of works. Now to figure out a makeshift steering gear.
Thanks,

Great Britian's Boy's Toy of the Year 1972 ..... how can you go wrong with that!?!?

Wow that's beautifully done excellent craftsmanship I just might have to convert 1 of mine!!!

There are a lot of them around so I don't feel guilty modifiying them and if worst comes to worst I could easily put them back to stock in most cases.

Very happy to help and glad you found the video(s) helpful to your project - good luck. These are fun little engines and I spent a fair amount of time (and money) on the steamroller version :-)
Hope to see videos of yours running!

Thanks, that was very helpful! Working my way through the series.

I would watch the series on this model on YouTube (actually the TE1a), here is the first video. It should answer your question.

Hi all, Recently obtained my first toy steam tractor, a Mamod TE1 that is mostly intact but I have a few questions.
How are the front wheels held on? There's a rod that runs through the smokestack, where the missing steering handle would be, is there some sort of pin or clip that holds the front wheels in place?
This model also didn't have the "coal scuttle" part, is that necessary for operation? It seems like it might be helpful keeping the fold back canopy roof in place, does the coal scuttle serve some part in operating the burner?
Recently got the right sized safety valve from Mamod Models, thanks for the link.
Also discovered that hand sanitizer burns pretty well in the burner tray. Gonna fire it up on the patio and see how this thing works.
Thanks,
Michael
