Daniel, you may have gotten me into trouble, we will be in Paris for a short time this fall, somehow I have got to convince my better half that this is an important stop in our schedule.  :)
You might want to try Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris.

I know there are some special engines in there.

Perhaps you could beguile her with an offer to show her some of the sources for all the modern conveniences that she now enjoys. That and a promise of a fine meal afterwards might just get you in the door for a few minutes!!!

The lathe has often been called "The Mother of all Machine Tools", and for very good reason, as well featured in this video.

I think I linked to another one of these "Machine Thinking" videos in another thread on this board. They have produced several other videos as well, all worth the watching IMHO.
